Derry Junior Hurling Championship
The Derry Junior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Leadon Timber Frame Derry Junior Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Derry JHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Derry GAA, Derry County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association for the third tier hurling teams in County Londonderry in Northern Ireland. In its current format, the Derry Hurling Championship begins with a group stage. The eight participating teams are divided into two groups of four and play each other in a Round-robin tournament, round-robin system. The third-placed team in each group proceeds to the junior final at the Derry GAA, Derry Centre of Excellence. The winner of the Derry Junior Hurling Championship qualifies for the subsequent Ulster Junior Club Hurling Championship, Ulster Junior Club Championship. Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points.
