Dermott is a city in Chicot County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,316 at the 2010 census. Dermott was incorporated in 1890. Dermott was home to the Dermott Crawfish Festival. Geography Dermott is located in the northwest corner of Chicot County at (33.528712, -91.437657). Bayou Bartholomew, a tributary of the Ouachita River, touches the southwest corner of the city. U.S. Route 165 passes southeast of the city center, leading north to McGehee and south to Montrose. Arkansas Highway 35 passes through the center of Dermott and leads northwest to Monticello. According to the United States Census Bureau, Dermott has a total area of , of which is land and , or 1.97%, is water. Chicot County ( ) is a county located in the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,800. The county seat is Lake Village. Chicot County is Arkansas's 10th county, formed on October 25, 1823, and named after Point Chicot on the Mississippi River. Desha County ( ) is a county located in the southeast part of the U.S. state of Arkansas, with its eastern border the Mississippi River. At the 2010 census, the population was 13,008. It ranks 56th of Arkansas's 75 counties in terms of population. The county seat is Arkansas City. Located in the Arkansas Delta, Desha County's rivers and fertile soils became prosperous for planters under the cotton-based economy of plantation agriculture in the antebellum years and late 19th century. Still largely rural, it has suffered population losses and economic decline since the mid-20th century. But following widespread farm mechanization, Desha County underwent a demographic and economic transformation. Halley, Arkansas
Halley is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Desha County, Arkansas, United States. It was first listed as a CDP in the 2020 census with a population of 44. History John J. Bowie (eldest brother of James Bowie) purchased land in the area in 1857. Construction of the Mississippi, Ouachita and Red River Railroad—the first chartered railway in Arkansas—began in 1852, and of track had been laid west from Eunice by the start of the Civil War. The line passed through Bowie's land, and a stop there was called "Bowie Station". The railroad was completed after the war, but abandoned in 1875 after flooding on the Mississippi River damaged the railbed and bridges. Highway 208 between Eunice and Halley was built on the abandoned railbed. Bowie Station was later renamed "Halley" after early settlers, the Halley family. Drew County, Arkansas
Drew County is a county located in the southeast region of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,509, making it the 39th most populous of Arkansas's 75 counties. The county seat and largest city is Monticello. Drew County was formed on November 26, 1846, and named for Thomas Drew, the third governor of Arkansas. Located on the edge of the Arkansas Delta and the Arkansas Timberlands, its fertile lowland soils produced prosperity for early settlers in the antebellum era. Cotton was the major commodity crop, cultivated by the labor of enslaved African Americans. Corn, apples, peaches and tomatoes were also grown through their work. Dermott High School
Dermott High School is an accredited public high school located in the community of Dermott, Arkansas, United States. It is the only high school administered by the Dermott School District and is one of two public high schools based in Chicot County, Arkansas. The school has just over 200 students, in grades 7 through 12. History In summer 1885, Dermott established its first public white school, which was used in the winter as a black school. After its first year, various buildings were used until 1908 when the current school system was established including a new elementary school. The original 1908 brick building was used until 1976. In 1889, Isaac George Bailey co-founded a school for African Americans in Dermott. It was succeeded by Morris-Booker High School and Memorial College.
