Derienni
{{inline, date=April 2020 Derienni was the group of the native bandits in the Republic of New Granada, Grenadine Department of Panama in the early 1850s, during the California Gold Rush. They would rob the pack trains crossing the Isthmus of Panama with sacks of California gold and run off with it into the hills. These highwaymen harassed the gold trains to the point that several of the large shippers were considering transferring their business to the Transit Route of Commodore Vanderbilt across the History of the Nicaragua Canal, Isthmus of Nicaragua who promised to hire units of the Nicaraguan army as guards. Republic Of New Granada
The Republic of New Granada was a 1831–1858 centralist unitary republic consisting primarily of present-day Colombia and Panama with smaller portions of today's Costa Rica, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru and Brazil. On 9 May 1834, the national flag was adopted and was used until 26 November 1861, with the Gran Colombian colours in Veles' arrangement. The merchant ensign had the eight-pointed star in white. Randolph Runnels
Randolph "Ran" Runnels (born 1827) was an American soldier and lawman. He fought in the Mexican–American War and then traveled to Panama in 1849 where he ran a business transporting goods and passengers across the isthmus by riverboat and mule team. In 1854, he was authorized by the Panamanian governor, Urrutia Añino, to lead an armed police force to fight banditry along the Panama Railroad line. His notoriety as a "hangman" is unsubstantiated and based on fictional accounts published in the 1930s and later. Early life Runnels was born in Mississippi in December, 1827. By the age of nine he had become an orphan and was placed under the guardianship of his uncle, Hiram George Runnels, former governor of Mississippi. Kidnapping Panamanian authorities conducted a study which indicates that almost 90 percent of express kidnappings are unreported due to the threat that thieves impose on the victim and relatives of the victim. The procedure of express kidnapping consist of abducting the victim and taking possession of valuables such as cellphones, watches, credit cards, cash and jewelry. Besides taking all of the victim's valuables, the kidnappers make the victim withdraw money from different ATM locations. Once the kidnapper is satisfied, the abducted person is usually released. Darién Province
Darién (, , ) is a province in Panama whose capital city is La Palma. With an area of , it is located at the eastern end of the country and bordered to the north by the province of Panamá and the region of Kuna Yala. To the south, it is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and Colombia. To the east, it borders Colombia; to the west, it borders the Pacific Ocean and the province of Panama.
