Derek Volker
Derek Volker, (born 1939) is a retired senior Australian public servant. Life and career Born in 1939, Volker was educated at Toowoomba State High School and the University of Queensland. Volker's early Australian Public Service career was in the Department of Labour and the Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs. Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser appointed Volker as Secretary of the Department of Veterans' Affairs in 1981, with the mandate to clean up the administration of the department. In 1986, Prime Minister Bob Hawke transferred Volker to a position as Secretary the Department of Social Security (DSS). In his time at DSS, Volker had to deal with the pressures of the recession and its impact on Social Security offices, including long queues and increasing tension. Prime Minister Paul Keating announced Volker's transfer from the Department of Social Security to the Department of Employment, Education and Training in March 1993. David Alexander Hollway is a former senior Australian public servant and policymaker. He retired from the Australian Public Service in 1996 to head the 2000 Summer Olympics. Background and career Hollway graduated from the University of Sydney in 1968, with first-class honours in philosophy. He started his Australian Public Service career in the Department of External Affairs in 1969. Between 1988 and 1990, Hollway was Chief of Staff for Prime Minister Bob Hawke. In 1993, Hollway was appointed Secretary of the Department of Industry, Technology and Regional Development (later the Department of Industry, Science and Technology). Anthony Stuart "Tony" Blunn (born 1936) is a retired Australian senior public servant. Life and career Tony Blunn was born in 1936. He joined the Australian Public Service at the age of 21, after four years with a firm of solicitors in Melbourne. In 1979 Blunn took a position in the Department of Finance, in an area linked with works, mainland Territories, defence and other areas. He moved to the Department of Business and Consumer Affairs in 1980, and was appointed to his first permanent Secretary role in 1981 as head of the Department of the Capital Territory. Anthony Joseph "Tony" Ayers (16 September 193311 April 2016) was an Australian public servant. Life and career Ayers was born on 16 September 1933. His first job was teaching in a Victorian school. He later was an education officer in Pentridge Prison, Melbourne. In 1967 Ayers moved to Canberra as Director of Welfare in the Department of the Interior. He was appointed to his first Secretary role in 1979 as head of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs. Ayers moved soon after, in 1981, to the Department of Social Security (DSS). During his time at DSS he served concurrently for three months as Acting Secretary of the Department of Community Services. Ayers moved to an appointment as Secretary of the Department of Community Services and Health when the Hawke government restructured the public service and created "super ministries" in 1987.
