Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1997 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for one hundred and twenty-six years. In the County Championship, they won two matches to finish sixteenth in their ninety fourth season in the Championship. They came fourteenth in the AXA Life League and did not progress from the group in the National Westminster Bank Trophy. They reached the semi-final of the Benson & Hedges Cup. 1997 season Derbyshire played seventeen matches in the County Championship, one against Cambridge University, one against the touring Australians and one against the Pakistan A team. They won five first class matches overall but three wins were in the non-championship games leaving only two wins in the championship. They won four and lost nine matches in the Sunday league. This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. Adrian Rollins
Adrian Rollins (born 8 February 1972) is an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club, Derbyshire from 1993 to 1999 and for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club, Northamptonshire from 2000 to 2002. He was a right-handed batsman (cricket), batsman and a right-arm Seam bowling, medium-pace bowler. An imposing presence, measuring 6 ft 5 in and weighing around sixteen stone, Rollins made his debut for Derbyshire as an emergency wicket-keeper in the absence of teammates Bernie Maher and Karl Krikken, making him possibly the tallest wicket-keeper in first-class cricket history. Essex County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Essex. Founded in 1876, the club had minor county status until 1894 when it was promoted to first-class status pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895, since then the team has played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. Sussex County Cricket Club is the oldest of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Sussex. Its limited overs team is called the Sussex Sharks. Hampshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Hampshire. Hampshire teams formed by earlier organisations, principally the Hambledon Club, always had first-class status and the same applied to the county club when it was founded in 1863. Because of poor performances for several seasons until 1885, Hampshire then lost its status for nine seasons until it was invited into the County Championship in 1895, since when the team have played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. The Australian cricket team toured England in the 1997 season to play a six-match Ashes Test series against England. Australia, under Mark Taylor, won the series 3–2 with strong batting performances from Matthew Elliott supporting the decisive bowling of Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie. England had enjoyed good form leading up to the series, with a 3–0 One Day International victory, and success in New Zealand; however, after winning convincingly in the first Test the host team struggled. Phillip Anthony Jason "Daffy" DeFreitas (born 18 February 1966) is an English former cricketer. He played county cricket for Leicestershire County Cricket Club, Leicestershire, Lancashire County Cricket Club, Lancashire and Derbyshire County Cricket Club, Derbyshire, as well as appearing in 44 Test cricket, Test matches and 103 One Day Internationals, ODIs.
