Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1988 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for one hundred and eighteen years. They reached the final of the Benson & Hedges Cup and reached the quarter-finals in the National Westminster Bank Trophy. In the County Championship, they won four matches to finish fifteenth in their eighty-second season in the Championship. They came twelfth in the Refuge Assurance League 1988 season Derbyshire played twenty two matches in the County Championship one against Cambridge University and one against the touring Sri Lankans. They won five first class matches overall and four in the championship. They won five and lost eight matches in the Sunday league. Kim Barnett was in his third season as captain and was top scorer. This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. Paul Newman (cricketer)
Paul Geoffrey Newman (born 10 January 1959) is an English former cricketer who played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club between 1980 and 1989. Newman was born in Evington, Leicester, and his cricketing career started in the 1976 Second XI season, playing with the Leicestershire second XI, where he played until the end of the 1979 season. He was spotted by Derbyshire, who picked him up and handed him a first-class debut towards the end of the 1980 season. Newman continued playing for Derbyshire throughout nine years and was in the victorious National Westminster Bank Trophy team in the 1981 season. His highest first-class score was an innings of 115, the only century of his career, against Leicestershire in 1985. Newman's best bowling figures were 8–29 against Yorkshire in the 1988 season. Warwickshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Warwickshire. Hampshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Hampshire. Hampshire teams formed by earlier organisations, principally the Hambledon Club, always had first-class status and the same applied to the county club when it was founded in 1863. Because of poor performances for several seasons until 1885, Hampshire then lost its status for nine seasons until it was invited into the County Championship in 1895, since when the team have played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Northamptonshire. Its limited overs team is called the Northants Steelbacks – a reference to the Northamptonshire Regiment which was formed in 1881. The name was supposedly a tribute to the soldiers' apparent indifference to the harsh discipline imposed by their officers. Gloucestershire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Gloucestershire. Founded in 1870, Gloucestershire have always been first-class and have played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. The club played its first senior match in 1870 and W. G. Ole Henrik Mortensen (born 29 January 1958) is a Danish first-class cricketer, probably the best his country has produced. A fast-medium right-arm bowler, in a first-class career with Derbyshire that ran from 1983 to 1994 he took 434 wickets at a good average of 23.88. Playing career He was 25 when he went to England to play cricket in 1983. He immediately established himself in the Derbyshire side and took 66 wickets at 24.31. ''Wisden'' that year described him as "accurate, hostile and, above all, a bowler of unquenchable spirit". It was his most successful season, and also included his best innings and match figures, when in his seventh first-class match he took 6 for 27 and 5 for 62 to help Derbyshire beat Yorkshire by 22 runs at Sheffield.
