Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1905
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1905 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirty-four years. It was their eleventh season in the County Championship and they won three matches to finish fourteenth in the Championship table. 1905 season Derbyshire played twenty games in the County Championship, one match against MCC and one against the touring Australians. The captain for the year was Albert Lawton. Levi Wright was top scorer with over 1700 runs and four centuries and Billy Bestwick took most wickets with over 100. However lacking greater depth, Derbyshire won just three matches in the County Championship and lost 16 which put them at fourteenth in the table. The most significant addition to the Derbyshire squad in the season was George Buckston who though playing only one match in the 1905 season went on to become captain. This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. However the club continued to play first class counties and most of the players carried on with the club. George Walkden
George Godfrey Walkden (10 March 1883 – 16 May 1923) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1905 and 1906. Walkden was born at Derby. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1905 season in July against Nottinghamshire, when he made 27 runs in his first innings. He played five more matches for Derbyshire during the 1905 season making his top score of 33 against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). His regular double figure run totals tailed off after his first three matches and he played just one match for the county in the 1906 season. Walkden played 13 innings in seven first-class matches with an average of 8.76 and a top score of 33. Sussex County Cricket Club
Sussex County Cricket Club is the oldest of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Sussex. Its limited overs team is called the Sussex Sharks. The club was founded in 1839 as a successor to the various Sussex county cricket teams, including the old Brighton Cricket Club, which had been representative of the county of Sussex as a whole since the 1720s. Arnold Warren
Arnold Warren (2 April 1875 – 3 September 1951) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1897 and 1920 and played for England in 1905. He was the first bowler from Derbyshire to take 100 wickets in a season, a feat he performed three times. Cricket career He made his debut for Derbyshire against Lancashire in May 1897. During his time at Derbyshire, he was partnered by Billy Bestwick in a dangerous fast-bowling partnership that never gained much reward because they had very small totals to bowl at. Though rarely judged a better bowler than Bestwick, it was owing to his superiority as a batsman and fieldsman that Warren gained the pair's only England cap against Australia at Headingley in 1905. Essex County Cricket Club
Essex County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Essex. Founded in 1876, the club had minor county status until 1894 when it was promoted to first-class status pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895, since then the team has played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. Essex currently play all their home games at the County Cricket Ground, Chelmsford. Samuel Cadman
Samuel William Anthony Cadman (29 January 1877 – 6 May 1952) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire for over quarter of a century between 1900 and 1926. He was an effective all-rounder and scored over 14,000 runs and took over 800 wickets in his first-class career. Cadman was born at Werneth, Cheshire, the son of Samuel Cadman, a cotton mill overlooker, and his wife Elizabeth. They were shortly afterwards living at Tintwistle. Cadman made his debut for Derbyshire in May 1900 with an unnotable performance in a match against Lancashire. He played in two further matches that year, making his bowling debut against Surrey when he took a single wicket. He played five matches in 1901 but missed a season in 1902. From 1903 he became a regular player, remaining a stalwart all-rounder until 1926, and in a match against Nottinghamshire he took five wickets for 42. Lancashire County Cricket Club represents the historic county of Lancashire in English cricket. The club has held first-class status since it was founded in 1864. Lancashire's home is Old Trafford Cricket Ground, although the team also play matches at other grounds around the county. James Wright (cricketer, Born 1874)
James Wright (25 March 1874 – 20 August 1961) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1898 and 1905. Wright was born at Newbold, Leicestershire, the son of Thomas Wright, a coal miner and his wife Elizabeth. In 1881 they were living at Castle Gresley, Derbyshire. Wright made his debut for Derbyshire against Lancashire in the 1898 season when he scored 2 and 1. However in the next match, a Derbyshire victory over Hampshire, he made 53 not out. He played a total of five matches in the 1898 season. He played one more game for the club in the 1905 season. Wright was a right-hand batsman and played ten innings in six first-class matches with an average of 10.33 and a top score of 53 not out. He bowled nine overs but took no wickets. He was also an occasional wicket-keeper. William Bagguley
William Bagguley (9 September 1866 – 18 April 1936) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1905. Bagguley was born in Ruddington, the son of Robert Bagguley, a stocking framework knitter and his wife Martha. Bagguley followed his father's occupation from a young age. Bagguley made a single first-class appearance for Derbyshire, during the 1905 season, against Sussex. From the lower order, he scored 5 runs in the only innings in which he batted. William Peach
William Peach (6 May 1875 – 29 January 1959) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1905. Peach was born in Timberland Fen, Lincolnshire, the son of Joseph Peach, a labourer, and his wife Olive. Peach played club cricket for Chesterfield Cricket Club, and made his first and only first-class appearance for Derbyshire in the 1905 season against Leicestershire in July. He took 4 wickets for 46, including the wickets of John King and Albert Knight and made 10 runs in his second innings in a match when Derbyshire players averaged 3 in the first innings and 8 in the second. Peach was a right-arm medium-fast bowler and took 4 wickets at an average of 11.50 in his first-class career and scored 10 runs in total.
