Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1903
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1903 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirty two years. It was their ninth season in the County Championship and they won five matches to come twelfth 1903 season Derbyshire played sixteen games in the County Championship in addition to two matches against W.G. Grace's London County Cricket Club and one against MCC. They won four matches in the Championship and one against London County. The captain for the year was Albert Lawton in his second season as captain. Levi Wright was top scorer and Billy Bestwick took most wickets. A significant addition to the Derbyshire side was Arthur Morton who played for the club until 1926. Other new players in the season were R T Ryder who played his one career first class match against London County and G Green who also made one appearance against London County but played for Derbyshire intermittently over several seasons. Derbyshire County Cricket Club Seasons
This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. However the club continued to play first class counties and most of the players carried on with the club. John Hulme (cricketer, Born 1862)
John Joseph Hulme (30 June 1862 – 11 July 1940) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club between 1887 and 1903. Hulme was born in Church Gresley, Swadlincote, Derbyshire. He debuted for Derbyshire in the 1887 season against Marylebone Cricket Club in May, and took two wickets in the second innings. He played six more county matches in the season, but Derbyshire lost first-class status that year. In 1888 with several Derbyshire players he played for an England XI against the Australians and took 7–14. He also took the most wickets for Derbyshire in the 1888 season including 15 wickets in one game against Yorkshire. In 1889 he played several matches for Marylebone Cricket Club. He played consistently and regularly for Derbyshire until it rejoined the championship in the 1895 season. Maynard Ashcroft
Edward Maynard Ashcroft (27 September 1875 – 26 February 1955) was an English doctor and cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1897 and 1906 and captained the Derbyshire team in 1904. Early life Ashcroft was born at Longsight, Manchester, son of Henry N Ashcroft, a Manchester merchant and his wife Charlotte. They lived at 14 Birch Side Moss Side. Ashcroft studied medicine at Owens College, Manchester, and became RMO at Dewsbury Smallpox Hospital. He later became assistant MOH at Derby. Cricket career Ashcroft made his cricket debut for Derbyshire in 1897 and remained with the team until 1906. Ashcroft captained Derbyshire for part of 1904 although Albert Lawton who was captain in the preceding and succeeding years also captained games. William Ellis (English Cricketer)
William Ellis (28 August 1876 – 22 January 1931) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1898 and 1906. Ellis was born in Whitwell, the son of Thomas Ellis, a joiner, and his wife Jane. Ellis' first-class cricketing career began for Derbyshire in the 1898 season, making his debut against Nottinghamshire in the County Championship. He made two further appearances during the season, against Lancashire and Essex. William Storer
William Storer (25 January 1867 – 28 February 1912) was an English footballer and a cricketer who played six Tests from 1897 to 1899, played first-class cricket for Derbyshire from 1887 to 1905 and played football for Derby County. He scored nearly 13,000 runs for Derbyshire and achieved over 430 dismissals from behind the stumps. Storer was born at Ripley, Derbyshire, the son of John Storer, an engine smith, and his wife Elizabeth. In 1881 the family were living at Butterley Hill and he was a turner's apprentice. Storer was a specialist wicket keeper who was reputed to stand up to the wicket against fast bowlers. He was also a highly skilled batsman at a time when wicket-keeper batsmen were rare and twice averaged over fifty in a season. Charles Ollivierre
Charles Augustus Ollivierre (20 July 1876 – 25 March 1949) was a Vincentian cricketer who represented the West Indies in matches before they attained Test match status. Born in St Vincent, Ollivierre initially played first-class cricket for Trinidad; he was selected to tour England with the West Indies team in 1900. He later qualified to play first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1901 and 1907, becoming the first black West Indian to play for an English county. Ollivierre was reasonably successful in county cricket and had a reputation as a stylish batsman. However, he dropped out of first-class cricket after 1907 owing to eye trouble. Ernest Needham
Ernest Needham (21 January 1873 – 8 March 1936) was an English footballer and cricketer. He played in sixteen international football matches for England and captained the side in 1901. He was an outstanding left half who played for Sheffield United from 1891 until 1910. He was instrumental in their promotion campaign of 1892–93 and then captained their team from 1895 to 1905. Under his captaincy, United won the Football League First Division in 1898 and the FA Cup in 1899 and 1902. He played first-class cricket for Derbyshire from 1901 to 1912. Samuel Cadman
Samuel William Anthony Cadman (29 January 1877 – 6 May 1952) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire for over quarter of a century between 1900 and 1926. He was an effective all-rounder and scored over 14,000 runs and took over 800 wickets in his first-class career. Cadman was born at Werneth, Cheshire, the son of Samuel Cadman, a cotton mill overlooker, and his wife Elizabeth. They were shortly afterwards living at Tintwistle. Cadman made his debut for Derbyshire in May 1900 with an unnotable performance in a match against Lancashire. He played in two further matches that year, making his bowling debut against Surrey when he took a single wicket. He played five matches in 1901 but missed a season in 1902. Arnold Warren
Arnold Warren (2 April 1875 – 3 September 1951) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1897 and 1920 and played for England in 1905. He was the first bowler from Derbyshire to take 100 wickets in a season, a feat he performed three times. Cricket career He made his debut for Derbyshire against Lancashire in May 1897. During his time at Derbyshire, he was partnered by Billy Bestwick in a dangerous fast-bowling partnership that never gained much reward because they had very small totals to bowl at. Though rarely judged a better bowler than Bestwick, it was owing to his superiority as a batsman and fieldsman that Warren gained the pair's only England cap against Australia at Headingley in 1905. Leicestershire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Leicestershire. It has also been representative of the county of Rutland. The club's limited overs team is called the Leicestershire Foxes. Warwickshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Warwickshire. Yorkshire County Cricket Club
Yorkshire County Cricket Club is one of 18 first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Yorkshire. Yorkshire are the most successful team in English cricketing history with 33 County Championship titles, including one shared. The team's most recent Championship title was in 2015, following on from that achieved in 2014.
