Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1888
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1888 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for seventeen years and it was the first season they lost first class status. 1888 season Although deprived of first class status Derbyshire played the same opponents as in the previous year with two matches each against Lancashire, Yorkshire, Surrey and Essex and one match each against Leicestershire and Middlesex . They also played one match against MCC and one against the touring Australians. Derbyshire won three of their matches and lost the remaining nine. The captain for the year was William Chatterton who was also top scorer. John Hulme took most wickets. His total of 60 included 15 in one match against Yorkshire. Of those who made their debut, Edward Evershed and Herbert Mosby played regularly over the following years before Derbyshire regained first class status. This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. However the club continued to play first class counties and most of the players carried on with the club. Edward Evershed
Edward Evershed (3 November 1867 – 18 February 1957) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1888 and 1898. Life Evershed was born in Stapenhill, now part of Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire (then in Derbyshire), the son of Sydney Evershed the brewer and MP for Burton. In 1888, Evershed played non first-class matches for an Oxford University team and for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and then regularly for Derbyshire while they were without first-class status until 1893. Evershed made one first-class appearance for Derbyshire in 1898, as wicketkeeper against Warwickshire. During the season a number of players kept wicket instead of the regular William Storer who still took part in the matches. Evershed batted during the first innings, but did not make a contribution during the second, as the match petered out to a draw. William Storer
William Storer (25 January 1867 – 28 February 1912) was an English footballer and a cricketer who played six Tests from 1897 to 1899, played first-class cricket for Derbyshire from 1887 to 1905 and played football for Derby County. He scored nearly 13,000 runs for Derbyshire and achieved over 430 dismissals from behind the stumps. Storer was born at Ripley, Derbyshire, the son of John Storer, an engine smith, and his wife Elizabeth. In 1881 the family were living at Butterley Hill and he was a turner's apprentice. Storer was a specialist wicket keeper who was reputed to stand up to the wicket against fast bowlers. He was also a highly skilled batsman at a time when wicket-keeper batsmen were rare and twice averaged over fifty in a season. George Earl (cricketer)
George Burrill Earl (7 August 1859 – 20 April 1933), born George Burrill Earle, was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1883 and 1888. Earl was born in Melbourne, Derbyshire Melbourne () is a market town and civil parish in South Derbyshire, England. It was home to Thomas Cook, and has a street named after him. It is south of Derby and from the River Trent. Earl played in one first-class match during the 1883 season, though in the one innings he played, he was caught out quickly and put lower down the order. George Ratcliffe (cricketer, Born 1856)
George Ratcliffe (born George Ratcliff 1 April 1856 — 7 March 1928) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire from 1887 to 1889. Ratcliffe was born in Ilkeston, Derbyshire, the son of George Ratcliff, a coal miner, and his wife Priscilla. He became a butcher. Ratcliffe made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1887 season in a match in June against Surrey. In this he scored 64, but his average fell from this point in his remaining four first-class matches. At the end of the season Derbyshire left the championship but Ratcliffe continued to play for the club in the 1888 and 1889 season. Ratcliffe was a left-handed middle-upper order batsman and played in 10 innings in 5 first-class matches. He bowled two overs but did not take a wicket. Walter Sugg
Walter Sugg (21 May 1860 – 21 May 1933) was an English first-class cricketer, who played for Yorkshire in 1881, and for Derbyshire from 1884 until 1902. Life and career Sugg was born at Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England, the son of a Sheffield solicitor and was himself a solicitor's clerk. He was educated at Sheffield Grammar School. He first played for Yorkshire in 1881 against Kent when he made 9 runs in his only innings. In 1884, Sugg joined Derbyshire and went on to play 128 games for the club. He made his debut against Kent in June when he took three wickets in the second innings, took two catches in the first innings and was 26 not out in his first batting innings. He played one more match in 1884 and then played a fuller season in 1886 and 1887. Between 1888 and 1893, Derbyshire games were not first-class, but Sugg continued playing regularly. Sydney Evershed
Sir Sydney Herbert Evershed (13 January 1861 – 7 March 1937) was an English brewer and cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire from 1880 to 1901 and was a long-serving club captain from 1891 to 1898. Evershed was born in Stapenhill, the son of Sydney Evershed the brewer and MP for Burton. He was educated at Clifton College where he was in the School XI and XV. Evershed played cricket for Burton on Trent and for Staffordshire in 1878s. His Derbyshire career began in 1880 and he appeared in a Gentlemen of Derbyshire team during the 1880 season, in which he made 85 in the first innings before being bowled. Three days later he made his first appearance for Derbyshire against Yorkshire, though he was out for a duck in his first innings. Levi Wright
Levi George Wright (15 January 1862 – 11 January 1953) was an English footballer and first-class cricketer. He played association football for Derby County and Notts County and cricket for Derbyshire from 1883 to 1909 being captain for a season and a half in 1906–07. He scored over 15,000 runs in his first-class career and took 237 catches. He was one of nineteen sportsman who achieved the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County. Wright was born at Oxford and moved to Derby in 1881 to become a teacher at St Anne's School. He first played for the Napier Cricket Club, a pub team based at 'Sir Charles Napier' in Derby and then for the Derby Midland Club. Walter Hall (cricketer)
Walter Hall (27 November 1861 – 19 November 1924) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Derbyshire from 1882 to 1892 Hall was born at Whitfield, Derbyshire. In 1881 he was working at a print works at Glossop. Hall made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in the 1882 season against Yorkshire in June when he took a wicket and a couple of catches, but failed to strike highly as an opener. He played one more match for the club that season as a tail-ender. Hall next played first-class in the 1885 season when he played five matches and achieved a best bowling performance of 6 for 43 against Lancashire. He played two matches in the 1886 season. William Cropper
William Cropper (27 December 1862 – 13 January 1889) was an English cricketer and footballer who played cricket for Derbyshire County Cricket Club between 1882 and 1888 and football, as a centre forward, once for Derby County. He was one of nineteen sportsmen to achieve the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County, but died aged 26 as a result of an accident while playing football for Staveley. Cropper was born at Brimington, Derbyshire, the son of Thomas and Mary Cropper, and was a bricklayer. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1882 season. George Davidson (cricketer)
George Arthur Davidson (29 June 1866 – 8 February 1899) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1886 and 1898 and for Marylebone Cricket Club between 1888 and 1898. A useful all-rounder, he scored over 5500 runs and took 621 wickets in his first-class career. Davidson was born in Brimington, Derbyshire, the son of Josh Davidson, a coal miner and his wife Elizabeth. His father played one game annually for Derbyshire from 1871 to 1875. Davidson's first-class career began for Derbyshire in the 1886 season playing in the first match of the season against Marylebone Cricket Club, a game where he played in the lower order. George Glossop Walker
George Glossop Walker (1860–1908) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1881 and 1898. Early life Walker was born 14 June 1860 at Harthill Grange, Yorkshire, the son of George Walker a farmer. His father maintained a diary, which noted after his fifth birthday, "Mr Hudson sent Georgy a cricket bat and stumps". Walker then went to school, boarding at Whitwell and later was at Broomback House School, Sheffield. He took every opportunity to watch W. G. Grace play against Yorkshire. By 14, he was playing cricket for Whitwell and by 1880 he had a batting average of 27 and a bowling average of just 4. He was also winning prizes as a sprinter.
