Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1879 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire played their ninth season. Of the county sides Derbyshire played in the previous year they had matches against Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. However they did not play Hampshire or Kent. Derbyshire made a first innings total of 16 against Nottingham at Trent Bridge which remains a record for lowest number of runs in an innings for Derbyshire 1879 season Derbyshire played six county games in 1879, two each against Lancashire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire. They also played a first-class match against MCC. Derbyshire won both matches against Yorkshire, but lost to Nottingham and Lancashire (who shared the Champion County award) and MCC. Derbyshire County Cricket Club Seasons
This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. However the club continued to play first class counties and most of the players carried on with the club. William Wood-Sims
William Wood Wood-Sims (10 February 1858 – 30 November 1926) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1879 and 1886. Wood-Sims was born at Ironville, Derbyshire as William W Sims, the son of Joseph W Sims a boiler plate roller at an ironworks, and his wife Alice. Sims became a slater, and by 1881 was living with his parents at Alfreton. Later he changed his name to Wood-Sims. He played a game for Derbyshire in 1878 against a 16-man Uppingham team, but his first-class debut was in the 1879 season against Yorkshire in July. He then played one match in the 1880 season and one in the 1882 season before playing a fuller season in 1884. Also in 1884, he played one game for North against South. Fred Morley
Frederick Morley (16 December 1850 – 28 September 1884) was a professional cricketer who was reckoned to be the fastest bowler in England during his prime. During a 13-year career for Nottinghamshire and England he took 1,274 wickets at an average of 13.73. In 1879/80 Morley toured North America with Richard Daft, and in 1880 he was selected to play in the match that later became known as the first Test match to take place in England, taking 8 for 146, including five wickets in the first innings. He toured Australia in 1882/3 as part of the Honourable Ivo Bligh's side that aimed to recover the Ashes. However, he was hampered by an injury to his rib that he picked up when the team's ship was involved in a collision in the harbour at Colombo. Official reports deemed the incident an "unfortunate incidence of chance". Unwin Sowter
Unwin Sowter (22 April 1839 – 14 April 1910) was an English corn factor and miller and cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1871 and 1876. He was a member of the team that played Derbyshire's first match in May 1871. Sowter was born at Derby, the son of William Sowter and his wife Hannah Unwin. His father had a bakery business which he developed into corn factoring and malting. Sowton attended Derby School and joined the family business with his brothers. Sowter was one of the pioneers of cricket in Derby and around. He played against the All England Eleven as part of a Derby Town and South Derbyshire side in 1857 and 1859. The latter team included Lord Stanhope, Lord Paget, the Bodens, and Dove Gregory, and there was "considerable attendance of spectators, among whom were most of the neighbouring gentry and their families, and gay throngs of ladies". Ludford Docker
Ludford Charles Docker (26 November 1860 – 1 August 1940) was a businessman and an English cricketer. He played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1881 and 1886, captaining the side in 1884, and for Warwickshire in 1894 and 1895. Early life Docker was born in Smethwick, Staffordshire, the son of Ralph Docker and his wife Sarah Sankey. His father was a solicitor in practice at Birmingham and Smethwick who took on a large number of public appointments. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham. Cricket career Docker played cricket for Birmingham and Kidderminster in 1879 and also played for Derbyshire Colts in the 1879 season. His first-class debut was for Derbyshire in the 1881 season. He topped their batting averages that season. He played 48 first-class matches for Derbyshire and captained the team in the 1884 season. William Antliff
William Norris Antliff (23 August 1848 – 29 April 1909) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1880. Antliff was born in Bottesford, Leicestershire and became a railway clerk.British Census 1881 RG11 3402/12 p18 He played for Derbyshire Colts against the club in the 1879 season, although he was aged 30 at the time. He played two games for Derbyshire during the 1880 season. The first match was against the touring Australians in May and as it was completed in two days, the sides played an extra one innings match when Antliff made 37. His second first-class appearance was a few days later in a County match against Lancashire. Antliff was a right-handed batsman playing in or around the opening order. John Clayton (cricketer)
John Morton Clayton (17 November 1857 — 1 April 1938) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1881 and 1883. Clayton was born in Chesterfield, the son of Joseph Clayton and his wife Hannah. His father was founder of Clayton & Company, tanners and curriers, of Clayton Street Chesterfield. Clayton played for Derbyshire Colts and for Derbyshire in a miscellaneous match against Harrow Wanderers in the 1879 season. He played for Gentlemen of Derbyshire during a tour by Canada in 1880. He made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in the 1881 season when he scored a duck in his one and only innings before the match was rained off. He also played a miscellaneous match against Derbyshire Colts. Two years later, in the 1883 season, he represented the county again, in his second and final County match, against Surrey, in which he scored the only three runs of his first-class career. Enoch Cook (23 April 1845 – 14 April 1927) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1878 and 1879. Cook was born in Sandiacre Sandiacre is a town and civil parish in the borough of Erewash in Derbyshire, in the East Midlands region of England adjoining the border with Nottinghamshire. Joseph Flint
Joseph Flint (23 April 1840 – 2 November 1912) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1872 and 1879. Flint was born at Wirksworth, Derbyshire, the son of James Flint, a lead miner, and his wife Elizabeth. In 1870 Flint played for a Wirksworth team against an All-England XI with George Frost who followed him to Derbyshire. He debuted for Derbyshire in the 1872 season in a match against Lancashire, when he took two wickets and scored 13 and 19 not out. He played the return match against Lancashire that year, and also played for Derbyshire against the Queen's Club. He played one first-class game against Lancashire in the 1873 season and also appeared for Derbyshire in an additional fixture against Nottinghamshire. Ralph Docker (31 August 1855 — 7 July 1910) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1879. Docker was born in Harborne, Staffordshire, the son of Ralph Docker and his wife Sarah Sankey. His father was a solicitor in practice at Birmingham and Smethwick who took on a large number of public appointments. He was educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham. In 1873 he played for a Birmingham XXII against an All England XI, and then in 1878 in another Birmingham XXII against an Australian team. Docker played two matches for Derbyshire in the 1879 season making his debut against Marylebone Cricket Club in May 1879, as an opening batsman, and played his first and only county match two weeks later, moving down the order to face Lancashire. Arthur Wood (American Cricketer)
Arthur Machin Wood (21 February 1861 – 25 August 1947) was an English-born American cricketer, active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Though he started his cricket career with Derbyshire, Wood played most of his major matches with the Philadelphian cricket team. He played a total of 71 first-class matches. Cricket in England Wood was born in Pye Bridge in Derbyshire, England.
