Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1875 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire played their fifth season. Nottinghamshire had played informal matches against Derbyshire in previous seasons, and joined Lancashire and Kent to make a third County side playing first class matches against Derbyshire in 1875. Nottinghamshire dropped out again in the 1876 season, to be replaced by Hampshire. 1875 season All Derbyshire's matches in the season were first class as they played Nottinghamshire with a normal eleven man side in two matches as well as Kent and Lancashire. They also had a match against a United North of England Eleven. After an unbeaten season in 1874 season, Derbyshire won two matches and lost four. They won both matches against Kent, lost both against Nottinghamshire, lost against United North of England and drew one match and lost the other against Lancashire. Derbyshire County Cricket Club Seasons
This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. However the club continued to play first class counties and most of the players carried on with the club. William McIntyre (English Cricketer)
William McIntyre (24 May 1844 – 13 September 1892) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Nottinghamshire from 1869 to 1871 and for Lancashire from 1872 to 1880. McIntyre was born at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire and is first recorded as playing for Eastwood in 1866. In 1867, he began as a professional with the Nottingham Commercial Club at Trent Bridge and also started playing for the All England Eleven. A match for All England against the United England Eleven in 1869 marked his first-class debut. Also in 1869 he started playing for Nottinghamshire and achieved his career highest score of 99 in his second match of the season against Kent. In 1870 he took 3 five-wicket innings and took ten wickets in one match. Also in 1870 he took up a post with Bolton Cricket Club. Alfort Smith
Alfort Smith (7 July 1846 – 21 December 1908) was an English cricketer who kept wicket for Lancashire in 1867 and 1871 and for Derbyshire between 1873 and 1880. Life Smith was born in Bank Lane, near Bury Lancashire, but his parents moved to Glossop shortly after his birth. He became a cotton weaver, and started playing for Glossop cricket club in 1863 at the age of 16. He was a respected batsman and wicket-keeper at the club. He made his debut for Lancashire in 1867 against Yorkshire when he scored 2 and was not out for zero and held three catches behind the stumps. However, he did not play again until the 1871 season when he played against Derbyshire in their first outing. Smith was top scorer at 11 not out in Lancashire's record low innings score of 25, but his two catches and two stumpings were not enough to stave off defeat. William Rigley
William Rigley (24 March 1852 – 15 April 1897) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1873 and 1882. Rigley was born in Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, the son of John Rigley and his wife Ann. His father was a blacksmith and moved to Somercotes, Derbyshire. Rigley also became a blacksmith. He made his cricketing debut for Derbyshire in the 1873 season against Lancashire when he achieved his best bowling performance of 2 wickets for 10 runs. He played a non-first-class match against Nottinghamshire. In the 1874 season he only played non-first-class matches for Derbyshire against Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and United South of England. He also played for Colts of England against MCC. He began playing regularly for Derbyshire in the 1875 season playing four games in that year and four in the 1876 season when he achieved the top batting average of 22.4. John Platts (cricketer)
John Thomas Brown Dumelow Platts (23 November 1848 – 6 August 1898) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1871 and 1884. He was a member of the team that played Derbyshire's first match in May 1871. Platts was born to Robert and Alice Platts (née Dumelow) in Chellaston, Derbyshire. In his youth, he worked in the local gypsum mines, and in his spare time would pretend to play cricket by bowling stones at imaginary batsmen. An early game was for Hallam and Staveley in 1861 against an All England Eleven. He was a wheelwright by trade, but by 1868 was a professional at Ipswich School. In 1869 he played for Dudley and also for the Gentlemen of Worcester when he took 8 wickets in an innings. In 1870, Lord Coventry helped raise a subscription for Platts to join the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). George Frost (cricketer)
George Frost (16 October 1848 – 12 February 1913) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1872 and 1880. Frost was born in Wirksworth, the son of George Frost, a farmer/builder, and his wife Mary. He became a joiner and played cricket for Wirksworth - taking part in matches against All England XI in 1866, 1868 and 1870 Frost played his first match for Derbyshire in the 1872 season, against Lancashire which Derbyshire lost. This was also the second game for Joseph Flint who had played together with the Frosts at Wirksworth Cricket Club. Frost next played for Derbyshire in the 1874 season. In a win against Kent, he played alongside his brother John Frost who was making his single Derbyshire appearance, for a 41-run second-wicket partnership. John Smith (Derbyshire Cricketer)
John Smith (27 October 1841 — 26 November 1898) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire from 1871 to 1878. He was a member of the team that played Derbyshire's first match in May 1871. Smith was born in Clifton, Derby and was a solicitor by profession. From 1865 he was playing cricket regularly for Gentlemen of Derbyshire and South Derbyshire. Smith debuted for Derbyshire in the 1871 season in their first match against Lancashire. He was one of five round-arm bowlers of Derbyshire's debut season (the others being James Billyeald, Dove Gregory, William Hickton, John Platts, and John Tilson). Smith played one first-class match in the 1872 season and also played against the Prince's Club. William Curgenven
William Grafton Curgenven (30 November 1841 – 18 March 1910) was an English surgeon and cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1872 and 1878. Biography and career Curgenven was born in Plymouth and became a doctor and was MRCS. In the 1860s he was playing club cricket and for the Gentlement of Devon. He made two appearances in miscellaneous matches as early as 1864, when he played for South Wales Cricket Club against I Zingari, playing amongst W. G. Grace and his brother Edward, and, the following year, for Gentlemen of Devon. Curgenven was one of the parties to the foundation of Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1870. Robert Smith (Derbyshire Cricketer)
Robert Posnett Smith (1 November 1848 – 1 May 1899), later known as Robert Posnett Stevens, was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1871 and 1884 and was captain of the side from 1876 to 1883. He was a member of the team that played Derbyshire's first match in May 1871. Smith was born in Sawley, the son of John Smith a farmer and his wife Ruth. He was educated at Castle Donington School in Leicestershire and continued farming at Sawley. Smith took part in the very first fixture played by Derbyshire as a county team in the 1871 season, against a Lancashire side who posted the lowest total against Derbyshire in the history of first-class cricket. Unwin Sowter
Unwin Sowter (22 April 1839 – 14 April 1910) was an English corn factor and miller and cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1871 and 1876. He was a member of the team that played Derbyshire's first match in May 1871. Sowter was born at Derby, the son of William Sowter and his wife Hannah Unwin. His father had a bakery business which he developed into corn factoring and malting. Sowton attended Derby School and joined the family business with his brothers. Sowter was one of the pioneers of cricket in Derby and around. He played against the All England Eleven as part of a Derby Town and South Derbyshire side in 1857 and 1859. The latter team included Lord Stanhope, Lord Paget, the Bodens, and Dove Gregory, and there was "considerable attendance of spectators, among whom were most of the neighbouring gentry and their families, and gay throngs of ladies". Allen Hill (cricketer)
Allen Hill (14 November 1845, Kirkheaton, Huddersfield, Yorkshire – 28 August 1910, Leyland, Lancashire) played in the first-ever cricket Test, taking the first wicket. Hill also went on to umpire in the Test match played at Lord's in 1890. Early years Allen Hill was the son of Francis (Frank) Hill, a Hand Loom Fancy Weaver, and Elizabeth Thornton (married 5 September 1825, Kirkheaton). In 1851 Frank and Betty were living at Shaw Cross, Kirkheaton with 6 children. In 1861 they had moved to Cheesbourgh (sic) Fold with only Allen age 17, described as a Fancy Weaver, then living with them. Marriages Allen married Ellen Jessop in 1868 and in 1871 they were living at Common End, Lepton, Yorkshire. Allen's occupation at this time was described as Fancy Weaver. Tom Armitage
Thomas Armitage (25 April 1848 – 21 September 1922) was an English first-class cricketer, who in 1877 took part in what are retrospectively recognised as the first two Test matches played by England. The players in these matches having been alphabetically sorted, Armitage is the #1 capped England player. Life and career Armitage was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. He made his first-class debut for Yorkshire against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 1872, opening the batting in the first innings. He failed to make much of an impression in the game, scoring 0 and 1, taking 0–19 from eight overs and taking no catches. He next appeared for Yorkshire in 1874 against a United South of England XI, but again did little. Armitage's county cricket career took off in 1875, when he took 22 wickets in nine matches at just 7.59 apiece, including 7–27 against Derbyshire, and recorded the first of his four half-centuries, 68 not out against Surrey.
