The Department of Community, Culture and Leisure (often abbreviated to DCCL) was one of nine departments of the Isle of Man Government. It was created on 1 April 2010 taking over the leisure functions from the former Department of Tourism and Leisure along with the community and culture functions from various other departments. It was dissolved on 1 April 2014. History The department was created in 1986 as the Department of Tourism and Transport. With the addition of extra responsibilities in 1990 the department was renamed the Department of Tourism, Leisure and Transport. In 1994 there was a departmental reorganisation. The Department of Highways Ports and Properties and the Department of Tourism, Leisure and Transport became the Department of Tourism and Leisure and the Department of Transport. The Isle of Man Government ( gv, Reiltys Ellan Vannin) is the government of the Isle of Man. The formal head of the Isle of Man Government is the Lieutenant Governor, the personal representative of Charles III. The executive head is the Chief Minister. Douglas, the largest town in the Isle of Man, is its capital and seat of government, where most Government offices and the parliament chambers (Tynwald) are located. The Civil Service has more than 2,000 employees and the total number of public sector employees including civil servants, teachers, nurses, police, etc. was 7,413 full time equivalent at 31 March 2019. This is just under 10% of the population of the Island and 21% of the working population. The Isle of Man Railway (IMR) ( gv, Raad Yiarn Vannin) is a narrow gauge steam-operated railway connecting Douglas with Castletown and Port Erin on the Isle of Man. The line is narrow gauge and long. It is the remainder of what was a much larger network (over ) that also served the western town of Peel, the northern town of Ramsey and the small mining village of Foxdale. Now in government ownership, it uses original rolling stock and locomotives and there are few concessions to modernity. History The line from Douglas to Port Erin is the last remaining line of the former Isle of Man Railway Company, formed in 1870. Manx Electric Railway
The Manx Electric Railway ( Manx: ''Raad Yiarn Lectragh Vannin'') is an electric interurban tramway connecting Douglas, Laxey and Ramsey in the Isle of Man. It connects with the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway at its southern terminus at Derby Castle at the northern end of the promenade in Douglas, and with the Snaefell Mountain Railway at Laxey. Many visitors take an excursion on the trams. It is the oldest electric tram line in the world whose original rolling stock is still in service. History The Manx Electric Railway was built by Alexander Bruce, a banker, Frederick Saunderson, a civil engineer and Alfred Jones Lusty, a land owner, who formed the Douglas Bay Estate company to develop land north of Douglas. National Sports Centre (Isle Of Man)
The National Sports Centre (also known as NSC) in Douglas Isle of Man is a large multi-sports centre and athletics stadium. The NSC is owned by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture of the Isle of Man Government and operated by the Manx Sport & Recreation. History The NSC is built on the site of the former Belle Vue and King George V Park with phase one being opened in 1991. The centre is Quest Accredited (the UK Quality Scheme for Sport and Leisure) and has maintained its highly commended status since it was first awarded in December 2001. The 2001 Island Games was held on the Isle of Man with the NSC being used for some of the sports and the closing ceremony. In August 2007 the NSC won the runner-up award in the European City of Sport competition after a visit of assessors from the European Capitals of Sport Association. Curraghs Wildlife Park is a wildlife park in The Curraghs (also known as the Ballaugh Curraghs), an area of wetland in the north-west of the Isle of Man. The park is owned by the Isle of Man Government and is administered by the Department of Environment, Food & Agriculture. It was formerly administered through the island's Department of Community, Culture and Leisure. History The park was founded in 1963, under the Curraghs Acquisition Act 1963 (an Act of Tynwald). The Isle of Man Government purchased about of land to be divided between as a reserve and as a wildlife park. The park was formally opened by the Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man, Sir Ronald Garvey on 23 July 1965. David Cretney
David Clifford Cretney (born 15 January 1954) is a former Manx politician. He was, until March 2014, Minister of Infrastructure in the Isle of Man Government, and had formerly headed the Departments of Community, Culture & Leisure, Trade & Industry, and Tourism & Leisure. He was a Member of the House of Keys for the Manx Labour Party, representing Douglas South from 1985. He has been a member of the upper house, the Legislative Council since 2015. The Council of Ministers ( gv, Coonseil ny Shirveishee; often abbreviated informally to "CoMin") is the principal executive organ of the Isle of Man Government. Its role is similar to, though not identical with, that of the Cabinet in the United Kingdom. Until 1990, its title was the Executive Council.
