Department of Eagles is an American duo formed in New York in 2000, consisting of Daniel Rossen and Fred Nicolaus. History The band was formed in 2000 by Rossen and Nicolaus, who were friends and New York University (NYU) roommates. They created music from collected samples, assembled into songs and recorded with unlicensed recording software and a microphone borrowed from their neighbor, Chris Taylor, who later became Rossen's bandmate in Grizzly Bear, as well as Department of Eagles' producer and recording engineer.Official Bio , Department of Eagles Website, Retrieved on July 22, 2009. Van Dyke Parks (born January 3, 1943) is an American musician, songwriter, arranger, and record producer who has composed various film and television soundtracks. He is best known for his 1967 album ''Song Cycle (album), Song Cycle'' and for his collaborations with Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys (particularly the album ''Smile (The Beach Boys album), Smile''). It was originally released in the US as The Whitey On The Moon UK LP on Isota Records on October 21, 2003, and reissued in the UK as The Cold Nose on Melodic Records on January 8, 2008. The American Dust October 7, 2008 US reissue contains four bonus tracks. The album is sample-heavy and multilayered. The second track, "Sailing By Night," contains a sample of the song "Meetings Along The Edge" from the Philip Glass and Ravi Shankar project '' Passages'', as well as a sample from the Yellow Magic Orchestra track, Rydeen. The 7" vinyl release of the single was available for free to people who have pre-ordered ''In Ear Park'' online. The single was later released digitally on June 9, 2009. The song uses a sample of The Ronettes' song "You Baby" for the drum beat. It was covered by indie band Feed Me Jack on their 2012 album ''Chumpfrey.'' It was written by Billy Steinberg, Josh Alexander and Ruth-Anne Cunningham, and produced by the former two with Da Family Records founder Vincent Herbert.
