Denzil Holles (MP)
Denzil Holles (ca. 1538 – 12 April 1590) JP of Irby upon Humber, was a member of parliament for East Retford. Denzil Holles, the son of William Holles (MP), was given the manor of Irby upon Humber by his father, on the occasion of his marriage to Eleanor, daughter of Edmund Sheffield, 1st Baron Sheffield, in the mid-16th century. Holles was not an absentee landlord, spending much of his time in Irby. He made numerous improvements to the estate and was in the process of constructing a new manor house when he died in 1590. Writing in the 1600s, when the estate was owned by Denzil's son John Holles, 1st Earl of Clare, cousin Gervase Holles described it as: He married Eleanor Sheffield, daughter of Edmund Sheffield, 1st Baron Sheffield. Irby Upon Humber
Irby upon Humber or Irby-on-Humber is a small village and (as just Irby) a civil parish in North East Lincolnshire, England. The village is situated on the A46 road, south-west from Laceby. Village population at the 2001 census was 124, increasing to 128 at the 2011 Census. The residence of the Bishop of Grimsby is at Irby. History The village shares part of its name with other places in England such as Irby in the Marsh and Irby, Merseyside. David Mills in ''A Dictionary of British Place-Names'' gives the meaning of Irby as 'settlement or village of the Irish'. In the 11th century Domesday Book Irby's population of 11 villagers, 7 smallholders, 52 freemen, in over 70 households, was considered 'very large'. East Retford (UK Parliament Constituency)
East Retford was a parliamentary constituency in Nottinghamshire, which elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons for the first time in 1316, and continuously from 1571 until 1885, when the constituency was abolished. Although East Retford was technically a parliamentary borough for the whole of its existence, in 1830 its franchise had been widened and its boundaries had been extended to include the whole Wapentake of Bassetlaw as a remedy for corruption among the voters, and from that point onward it resembled a county constituency in most respects. William Holles (MP)
Sir William Holles (1509/10 – 18 January 1591) JP of Haughton, Nottinghamshire was a member of parliament for Nottinghamshire and also High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the Royal Forests. He was born the second son of William Holles of Haughton, and Elizabeth, daughter of George Scopham. He married Anne Denzell, daughter of John Denzel of Cornwall on 20 May 1535. After her death he married Ida Grosvenor, daughter of Sir Richard Grosvenor of Cheshire, around 1570. Edmund Sheffield, 1st Baron Sheffield
Edmund Sheffield, 1st Baron Sheffield, of Butterwick (22 November 1521 – 19 July 1549) was an English nobleman, the son of Sir Robert Sheffield (died 15 November 1531, son of Robert Sheffield and Helen Delves) and his second wife Jane Stanley, daughter of George Stanley, 9th Baron Strange and Joan le Strange, 9th Baroness Strange. Through his mother, he was a second cousin once removed of the reigning English monarch, King Henry VIII. Life Following his father's death in 1531, his wardship was granted to George Boleyn, Viscount Rochford, the brother of Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn. However, both Rochford and Boleyn were executed in 1536, and his wardship was transferred to John de Vere, the fifteenth Earl of Oxford. Sheffield married Anne de Vere, daughter of John de Vere, 15th Earl of Oxford, before 31 January 1538, and by her had a son and three daughters. The History Of Parliament
The History of Parliament is a project to write a complete history of the United Kingdom Parliament and its predecessors, the Parliament of Great Britain and the Parliament of England. The history will principally consist of a prosopography, in which the history of an institution is told through the individual biographies of its members. After various amateur efforts the project was formally launched in 1940 and since 1951 has been funded by the Treasury. As of 2019, the volumes covering the House of Commons for the periods 1386–1421, 1509–1629, and 1660–1832 have been completed and published (in 41 separate volumes containing over 20 million words); and the first five volumes covering the House of Lords from 1660-1715 have been published, with further work on the Commons and the Lords ongoing. John Holles, 1st Earl Of Clare
John Holles, 1st Earl of Clare (May 1564 – 4 October 1637) was an English nobleman. He was the son of Denzil Holles of Irby upon Humber and Eleanor Sheffield (daughter of Edmund Sheffield, 1st Baron Sheffield of Butterwick). His great-grandfather was William Hollyes, Lord Mayor of London. He was born at Haughton Hall, Nottinghamshire and educated at Christ's College, Cambridge from 1579, aged 12, after which he studied law at Gray's Inn from 1583. He was at Court until 1599. Holles married Anne Stanhope (daughter of Sir Thomas Stanhope) on 23 May 1591 in Shelford, Nottinghamshire. Through his marriage to Anne, he inherited Thurland Hall in Nottingham which was later known as Clare Place. The family seat was at Haughton Hall in the parish of Bothamsall, which was demolished in the late eighteenth century. He served as High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire for 1591–92. Gervase Holles
Gervase Holles (9 March 1607 – 10 February 1675) was an English lawyer, antiquarian and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1640 to 1642. He fought in the Royalist army in the English Civil War. Holles was the son of Frescheville Holles of Grimsby, Lincolnshire and was baptised at Grimsby on 13 March 1607. He was Mayor of Grimsby in 1636, 1638 and was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1639. In April 1640, Holles was elected Member of Parliament for Grimsby in the Short Parliament. He was re-elected MP for Grimsby for the Long Parliament in November 1640. He supported the King and was disabled in August, 1642. He was awarded MA at Oxford University on 1 November 1642 and served as colonel of foot to Charles I and Louis XIV. Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl Of Warwick
Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick, KG (c. 1530 – 21 February 1590) was an English nobleman and general, and an elder brother of Queen Elizabeth I's favourite, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Their father was John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, who led the English government from 1550–1553 under King Edward VI and unsuccessfully tried to establish Lady Jane Grey on the English throne after the King's death in July 1553. For his participation in this venture Ambrose Dudley was imprisoned in the Tower of London and condemned to death. Reprieved, his rehabilitation came after he fought for King Philip in the Battle of St. Quentin. The Rising of the North of 1569, also called the Revolt of the Northern Earls or Northern Rebellion, was an unsuccessful attempt by Catholic nobles from Northern England to depose Queen Elizabeth I of England and replace her with Mary, Queen of Scots. Background Elizabeth I succeeded her half-sister Mary I as queen of England in 1558. Elizabeth's accession was disputed due to the questioned legitimacy of the marriage of her parents (Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn), and Elizabeth's own questioned legitimacy due to the Act of Succession 1536.
