Dennis Marc Fujii
Dennis M. Fujii (born March 1, 1949) is a retired United States Army soldier who received the Medal of Honor in 2022 for his actions in the Vietnam War in 1971. Early life Fujii was born in Hanapepe, Hawaii, one of six children. Military service Fujii enlisted in the Army in 1968 and was able to get his high school diploma while in the service. Vietnam War Fujii deployed to South Vietnam in 1968, he spent his first nine months assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment (United States), 35th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division (United States), 4th Infantry Division as an assistant machine gunner. During his second tour in South Vietnam on 18 February 1971, now an Specialist (rank), Sp4c., Fujii was serving as crew chief on a Bell UH-1 Iroquois, UH-1H medevac helicopter from the 237th Medical Detachment, 61st Medical Battalion supporting Operation Lam Son 719 when it was hit by People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) fire and crash-landed at Landing Zone (LZ) Ranger North (). Hanapepe, Hawaii
Hanapepe or Hanapēpē is a historic, unincorporated community in Kauai County, Hawaii, United States. The name means "crushed bay" in Hawaiian, which may refer to landslides in the area. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Hanapepe as a census-designated place (CDP). The population was 2,678 at the 2020 census, up from 2,153 at the 2000 census. History Hanapepe was one of the locations visited by the United States Exploring Expedition under Charles Wilkes; the expedition arrived in Hawaii in late September 1840 and spent some time in the islands. It is one of the few towns on the island that was not created by the sugarcane plantations. In 1924, an armed labor dispute involving sugar workers occurred, ending in the Hanapepe massacre. Geography Hanapepe is located on the southern side of the island of Kauai. It is bordered to the east, across the Hanapēpē River and Hanapepe Bay, by the community of Eleele.
