Dennis Byrd (American Football, Born 1946)
Dennis Wayne Byrd (August 31, 1946 – July 22, 2010) was one of the most dominant defensive tackles in the Atlantic Coast Conference history earning first-team All-ACC honors in each of his three years of varsity competition at North Carolina State University and was a consensus first-team All-American as a Senior in 1967. College Career at NC State Byrd made several first-team All-America lists as a Junior in 1966 and was a consensus first-team All-American as a Senior in 1967. He was the first player from NC State to become a consensus First-team All-American and was the first three-time All-ACC player in conference history. Professional career Byrd was drafted sixth overall in the first round of the 1968 NFL Draft by the Boston Patriots. Byrd started all 14 games for the 1968 Patriots team, but he was never able to fully recover from a knee injury he suffered in his senior year at NC State and only played one year in the NFL. Defensive Tackle
A defensive tackle (DT) is a position in American football that will typically line up on the line of scrimmage, opposite one of the offensive guards, however he may also line up opposite one of the tackles. Defensive tackles are typically the largest and strongest of the defensive players. Depending on a team's individual defensive scheme, a defensive tackle may be called upon to fill several different roles. These roles may include merely holding the point of attack by refusing to be moved, or penetrating a certain gap between offensive linemen to break up a play in the opponent's backfield. If a defensive tackle reads a pass play, his primary responsibility is to pursue the quarterback, or simply knock the pass down at the line if it is within arm's reach.
