Dennis is an unincorporated community in Labette County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the community and nearby areas was 152. History Dennis had its start in the early 1880s by the building of the Memphis, Kansas and Colorado Railroad through that territory. The first post office in Dennis was established in May 1881. The nearby ''Big Hill Archeological District'' is on the National Register of Historic Places. Demographics For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined this community as a census-designated place (CDP). Area Code 620
Area code 620 covers telephone exchanges in most of southern Kansas. It was created as the result of a split from 316 on February 3, 2001. The area code stretches across the southern half of the state, from the Colorado border in the west to the Missouri border in the east. It completely surrounds 316, which now only serves Wichita and its inner suburbs, making it one of the six pairs of "doughnut area codes" in the numbering plan. Permissive dialing of 316 across southern Kansas continued until November 3, 2001. The most populous cities covered by the area code are Dodge City, Garden City, Hutchinson and Pittsburg. 620 was created due to the growing proliferation of cell phones in the Wichita area. Big Hill Lake
Big Hill Lake is a body of water in Labette County, Kansas, United States. It is located east of Cherryvale and southwest of Parsons. The reservoir holds of water, with available for public use. Fishing, picnicking, boating, and a sandy beach swimming area are popular activities. The lake is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Facilities available at Big Hill Lake include designated campsites both with and without utilities, group picnic and camping areas, primitive camping areas, potable water, sanitary facilities, boat launching ramps, playgrounds, a ball field and a swimming beach with a change house. Camping fees are collected at all of the park areas, and a day use fee is collected for the beach and boat ramps. Labette County USD 506 is a public unified school district headquartered in Altamont, Kansas, United States. The district includes the communities of Altamont, Angola, Bartlett, Dennis, Edna, Labette, Mound Valley, western and southern Parsons, and nearby rural areas.
