Denise Mary Allen
Denise Allen is a Meteorology Observer and Forecaster who worked with the Bureau of Meteorology. Early life Born in Pinnaroo, South Australia 1954, Allen initially trained as a teacher at Adelaide University, but became more interested in other fields and moved to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) where she developed her interest in Antarctica. In 1986, she received her amateur radio licence and used the callsign VKOYL. She said she would rarely use her microphone after becoming too popular and was often flooded with calls from fellow DXers. Career and impact Allen first arrived in Antarctica in 1985, working as an Observer for BOM at Macquarie Island. Over the next several years, Allen worked in Antarctica as an Observer and Senior Observer, before returning in 2005 as Meteorology OIC, and finally as Senior Meteorological Observer in 2007. Australian Antarctic Division
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is a division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. The Division undertakes science programs and research projects to contribute to an understanding of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. It conducts and supports collaborative research programs with other Australian and international organisations, such as the Bureau of Meteorology and Geoscience Australia, as well as administering and maintaining a presence in Australian Antarctic and sub-Antarctic territories. The Australian Antarctic Medal (stylised as Post-nominal letters, post-nominal), originally designated the Antarctic Medal until 18 December 1997, is a meritorious service award of the Australian honours and awards system, instituted by Letters patent, Letters Patent on 2 June 1987 (amended 18 December 1997 and 13 December 2011). Unique among the Australian meritorious service awards, the Australian Antarctic Medal may be awarded to the same person more than once. The medal may be awarded to anyone who has given outstanding service in connection with an Antarctic expedition, in scientific research, exploration, or in support of such work.
