Denis Coffey (UCD President)
Denis Coffey (born 1983) is an Irish hurler who played as a right corner-back for the Waterford senior team. Coffey joined the team during the 2004 National League and was a semi-regular member of the team until after the 2008. During that time he won Munster medals and one National League medal as a non-playing substitute. At club level Coffey is a dual player with the Sliabh gCua–St Mary's club. Playing career Club Coffey plays his club hurling with the St Mary's club while he also plays Gaelic football with the Sliabh gCua club. In 2011 he won a junior football championship medal with Sliabh gCua. Inter-county Coffey first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Waterford minor hurling team in 2001. He enjoyed little success in this grade. Coffey made his senior debut for Waterford in a National League game against Laois in 2004. Sliabh GCua–St Mary's GAA
Sliabh gCua–St Mary's GAA is a GAA club based between Dungarvan and Clonmel, County Waterford, Ireland. The club plays both hurling and Gaelic football. The club can trace its way back to 1927 but it was in 1970 that the present club Sliabh gCua–St Mary's GAA was formed. The club still uses two separate names depending on which sport they are playing. The name St Mary's is used as the name for its hurling teams, while its football teams still go under the name of Sliabh gCua. At underage, they are joined with Modeligo and are known as Naomh Brid. At U21 level, they are joined with a few other small local clubs Colligan and Kilgobinet, who play under the name Comeragh Gaels. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league. The Laois County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Luthchleas Gael Coiste Laois) or Laois GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Laois. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Dual Player
Dual player or dual star is a term used in Hiberno-English to describe someone who competes in multiple sports — for example, in Victorian Ireland, cricket and hurling. The term today in Gaelic games typically describes a male player who plays both Gaelic football and hurling or, if a female player, a player of ladies' Gaelic football and camogie. The player does not necessarily have to play at the same standard in both sports. The number of dual stars at county level has decreased recently due to the increasing demands placed upon the best players of both sports. 2008 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship
The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship 2008 was the 122nd since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The first matches of the season were played on 25 May 2008, and the championship ended on 7 September 2008. Kilkenny went into the 2008 championship as defending champions, having won their thirtieth All-Ireland title the previous year. The championship culminated with the All-Ireland final, held at Croke Park, Dublin. The match was contested by Kilkenny and Waterford. It was their first meeting in the final since 1963. Kilkenny won the game by 3–30 to 1–13. It was their third All-Ireland title in succession and a record thirty-first for the county. Kilkenny overtook Cork with the most All Ireland Titles.
