Denali State Park
Denali State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough adjacent to the east side of Denali National Park and Preserve, along the George Parks Highway, Parks Highway. Byers Lake (Alaska)
Byers Lake is a small lake in Denali State Park, within the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska, Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska, United States, north of Talkeetna, Alaska, Talkeetna. The lake is named for a fisherman who was brought there many times by bush pilot Don Sheldon in the 1950s. It is accessible from the George Parks Highway and has a developed campground, several public-use cabins and a small boat dock. The Alaska Veterans Memorial is on a hilltop adjacent to the lake. Gasoline-powered motors and floatplane landings are not permitted on the lake. The lake used to contain a sizable population of lake trout but due to overfishing in the time since the highway was built in 1972 the population has dwindled, and landings of lake trout are now rare, although there are still burbot in the lake as well. Alaska Veterans Memorial
The Alaska Veterans Memorial is an outdoor memorial grove in Denali State Park in Interior Alaska. The memorial honors Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Alaska National Guard, and Merchant Marine veterans from Alaska,Alaska Veterans Memorial as well as specific Alaskans who were awarded the Medal of Honor. There are also small memorials to the passengers and crew of military plane crashes in Alaska. The site was selected because of the scenic beauty of the area and its location between Alaska's two largest cities. On a clear day visitors can see Denali from just outside the memorial. It is from Anchorage and from Fairbanks, on a hill above the Byers Lake campground. During the main visitor season (May–August) there is a staffed visitor center and bookstore. Alaska’s state park system is managed by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation. The system contains over 120 units spanning 3,427,895 acres, making it far larger than any other state park system in the United States. The State Park system began in 1970 with the creation of Denali State Park, Chugach State Park and Kachemak Bay State Park, three of the largest and still most popular parks in the state system. Curry Lookout
The Curry Lookout, also known as Camp Regalvista, is an historic backcountry shelter in Denali State Park, Alaska. It is located on top of Curry Ridge, overlooking the Susitna River and the hamlet of Curry, a former depot on the Alaska Railroad. The only access to the shelter is via a hiking trail beginning at mile 137.2 of the Parks Highway. The shelter is a hexagonal wood-frame structure with a tent-shaped roof, and no foundation. Each side is about wide and high. A flagpole rises from the center of the shelter, and is secured to the structure via steel cables. The shelter was built by the railroad in 1923, the same year the Curry Hotel (no longer standing) was built. It was intended as an excursion point for visitors, providing views of the surrounding area, including Denali. The shelter was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Susitna River
The Susitna River (; aht, Sasutna’; tfn, Susitnu) is a long river in the Southcentral Alaska. It is the 15th largest river in the United States, ranked by average discharge volume at its mouth. The river stretches from the Susitna Glacier to Cook Inlet's Knik Arm. Etymology and history The Susitna River was named by the Dena'ina Alaska Native people meaning "sandy river" ( tfn, Susitnu). The river appears to have been first explored by outsiders in 1834 by a " Creole ndiannamed Malakov" and the name may have been obtained by the Russians at that time, recorded by the Russia Hydrography Department on chart 1378 dated 1847 as () "Sushitna River". Kesugi Ridge Trail
Kesugi Ridge Trail is a through hike in Denali State Park, Alaska, United States. While there are many hiking trails in Alaska, Kesugi Ridge offers views and unique geological features. When the weather is right, visitors can see Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. The trail is long. There are four different access points along the Parks Highway from mile 137.6 to mile 163.9. The trail starts below treeline of spruce trees, and works it way up to the alpine tundra, along the ridge. This hike can be considered difficult because of the elevation gain and necessary boulder hopping. The trail crosses hills and valleys. A trailhead is the point at which a trail begins, where the trail is often intended for hiking, biking, horseback riding, or off-road vehicles. Modern trailheads often contain rest rooms, maps, sign posts and distribution centers for informational brochures about the trail and its features, and parking areas for vehicles and trailers.
