The Democratic Party of Germany (german: Demokratische Partei Deutschlands, DPD) was founded in 1947 as a German liberal party and is the forerunner of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) in the current Federal Republic of Germany. History Shortly after the end of World War II, bourgeois-liberal organizations were founded, which referred mainly to the traditions of the left-liberal German Democratic Party (DDP), the national-liberal German People's Party (DVP) and the Democratic People's Party (DVP) in the southwestern state of Württemberg. Their aim was to overcome the traditional division of German liberalism into a national-liberal and a left-liberal strain. Due to the division of Germany into four occupation zones and the lack of a political system of Germany as a whole, these parties organised "from the bottom up" on local, state and regional levels. Theodor Heuss
Theodor Heuss (; 31 January 1884 – 12 December 1963) was a German liberal politician who served as the first president of West Germany from 1949 to 1959. His cordial nature – something of a contrast to the stern character of chancellor Konrad Adenauer – largely contributed to the stabilization of democracy in West Germany during the ''Wirtschaftswunder'' years. Before beginning his career as a politician, Heuss had been a political journalist. Early life and education Heuss was born in Brackenheim, a small town and wine-making community near Heilbronn in Württemberg, on the border between the historic regions of Swabia and Franconia. West Germany is the colloquial term used to indicate the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG; german: Bundesrepublik Deutschland , BRD) between its formation on 23 May 1949 and the German reunification through the accession of East Germany on 3 October 1990. Bloc Party (politics)
Bloc Party are an English rock band, composed of Kele Okereke (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards, sampler), Russell Lissack (lead guitar, keyboards), Justin Harris (bass guitar, keyboards, saxophones, backing vocals) and Louise Bartle (drums, percussion). Former members Matt Tong and Gordon Moakes left the band in 2013 and 2015 respectively. Their brand of music, whilst rooted in rock, retains elements of other genres such as electronica and house music. The band was formed at the 1999 Reading Festival by Okereke and Lissack. They went through a variety of names before settling on Bloc Party in 2003. Moakes joined the band after answering an advert in '' NME'' magazine, while Tong was picked via an audition. Arthur Lieutenant (9 September 1884 – 10 October 1968) was a German Liberal politician. His political career peaked and crashed in the late 1940s when he found himself on the losing side as the newly established German Democratic Republic reverted to one-party government. Biography Early years Arthur Lieutenant was born in Jauer, an old market town in Silesia, some west of Breslau. On leaving school he studied Economics before embarking on a career as a tax lawyer.
