Democratic Party (Kazakhstan, 1995)
The Democratic Party of Kazakhstan was a political party formed on 1 July 1995 at the initiative of a group of representatives of the state apparatus. It was led by Altynbek Sarsenbaiuly who was Minister of Press and Mass Media at the time. The party won 12 seats in the 1995 legislative elections. It merged into a newly created pro-presidential party Otan in its 1st Congress on 1 March 1999. Altynbek Sarsenbaiuly
Altynbek Sarsenbayuly ( kk, Алтынбек Сәрсенбайұлы, ''Altynbek Särsenbaiūly''; 12 September 1962 – 11 February 2006) was a Kazakh politician who served in the Government of Kazakhstan before becoming a political opposition leader. At the time of his death, he served as co-chairman of the opposition Naghyz Ak Zhol (True Bright Path) party. In 2003, after a long career in senior Kazakh government positions, such as Information Minister and Ambassador to Russia, Sarsenbayuly joined the opposition ranks in protest against what he regarded as the administration's authoritarian policies. Soon after his decision to contest in the 2005 Kazakh presidential election, Sarsenbayuly faced government intimidation tactics, including a physical assault by unidentified individuals during a presidential campaign meeting with voters and the alleged beating of his two nephews in November 2005. Centre-right politics lean to the Right-wing politics, right of the Left–right politics, political spectrum, but are closer to the Centrism, centre. 1995 Kazakh Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in Kazakhstan on 9 December 1995, with a second round on 23 December. The result was a victory for the People's Union of Kazakhstan Unity, which won 25 of the 67 seats. Voter turnout was 79.8%.Nohlen et al., p420 Background In March 1994, the first post-independence general elections for the former unicameral Parliament took place. A year later, Kazakhstan's Constitutional Council invalidated this poll and declared the legislature illegal. President of the Republic Nursultan Nazarbayev thereupon announced the dissolution of the Parliament and plans to rule by decree pending new elections. A majority of the 177 Deputies challenged the dissolution. On 30 August 1995, a new constitution providing, inter alia, for a smaller bicameral legislature was approved by popular referendum. 1st Congress Of The Otan
The 1st Congress of the Otan party in Kazakhstan was held on 1 March 1999. President Nursultan Nazarbayev was unanimously chosen to be the chairman by the 385 delegates. Background On 21 October 1998, a public association in supporting Nursultan Nazarbayev's reelection campaign in the 1999 presidential election was created. On 19 January 1999, a meeting of the public association was held, at which it was decided to transform the organization into the Otan party. On 1 March 1999, the 1st Congress was held, which was attended by 385 delegates and 117 invited guests in Almaty. The delegates of the Congress chose Nazarbayev to be the chairman and adopted the composition of the audit commission and the party Charter.
