Democratic National Union of Kurdistan or Kurdistan National Democratic Union (Kurdish: ''Yekitiya Netewayî Demokratî Kurdistan'') (YNDK) is a political party that is based in South Kurdistan. Its main goal is to establish independence for the greater Kurdistan. It was founded in 1996 by Ghafur Makhmuri. Kurdish (, ) is a language or a group of languages spoken by Kurds in the geo-cultural region of Kurdistan and the Kurdish diaspora. Kurdish constitutes a dialect continuum, belonging to Western Iranian languages in the Indo-European language family. Iraqi Kurdistan or Southern Kurdistan ( ku, باشووری کوردستان, Başûrê Kurdistanê) refers to the Kurdish-populated part of northern Iraq. It is considered one of the four parts of "Kurdistan" in Western Asia, which also includes parts of southeastern Turkey (Northern Kurdistan), northern Syria (Western Kurdistan), and northwestern Iran (Eastern Kurdistan). The Kurdistan List ( ku, ليست كوردستان Lîstî Kurdistani), also known as the Kurdistan Alliance or the Brotherhood List, is the name of the electoral coalition that ran in the Kurdistan Regional Government parliamentary elections in Iraqi Kurdistan in July 2009. The Kurdistan List represented a coalition of the two main ruling parties in Iraqi Kurdistan, namely the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. It is the successor of the Democratic Patriotic Alliance of Kurdistan. The head of the Kurdistan List was the former deputy prime minister of Iraq, Dr. Barham Salih (PUK), who was later elected as the new prime minister of Iraqi Kurdistan in September 2009.
