Democratic Alignment (1950)
The Democratic Alignment () was a coalition of left-wing parties in Greece in the 1950s. It was established in order to participate in the 1950 elections and was formed by the Socialist Party led by Alexandros Svolos and the Left Liberals led by Stamatis Hatzibeis. The coalition was also supported by the outlawed Communist Party. In the elections the coalition received 9.7% of the vote and won 18 seats. Alexandros Svolos
Alexandros Svolos ( el, Αλέξανδρος Σβώλος; 1892, Kruševo, Manastir Vilayet, Ottoman Empire – 22 February 1956, Athens, Greece) was a prominent Greek legal expert, who also served as president of the Political Committee of National Liberation, a Resistance-based government during the Axis occupation of Greece. Early life Svolos was born in 1892 in Kruševo, now in North Macedonia, then part of the Ottoman Empire. He was an Aromanian. He studied law at Constantinople in 1911-1912, and from there went on to study at the University of Athens under Nikolaos Saripolos. In 1915 he was appointed to teach at the University. Between 1917 and 1920, he was the head of the Labour and Social Policy Direction at the Ministry of National Economy, and helped to push through legislation ratifying the newly founded International Labour Organization's conventions. Founded in 1918 as the Socialist Labour Party of Greece and adopted its current name in November 1924. It is the oldest political party in modern Greek politics. The party was banned in 1936, but played a significant role in the Greek resistance and the Greek Civil War, and its membership peaked in the mid-1940s. All People Front
The All People Front ( el, Παλλαϊκό Μέτωπο) was an electoral coalition formed between the Communist Party of Greece, the Common Front of Workers, Farmers and Professionals and the United Front of Workers and Peasants. It participated in the elections of 1935 as Communists and Allies and took 9,59% without electing any MPs. Before the elections of 1936, the Agricultural Party of Greece and several independent left-wing personalities entered the coalition in order to contest the 1936 Greek legislative election.
