Ada Belle Dement
Ada Belle Dement (1888 – November 28, 1945) was an American educator and clubwoman. In 1941, she became president of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs (NACWC). Early life and education In 1888, Ada Belle Dement was born in Caldwell, Texas. She studied at Prairie View College and the universities of California, Chicago, and Colorado. Career Following her studies, Dement became a teacher at Fort Worth high school for seventeen years. In Mineral Wells, she was principal of the high school and with the support of the PTA and community built a new school for the town. Dement was active in numerous organizations, serving as the Chairman of NACWC's Peace and Function Committee, Senior State Supervisor of Girls, and President of the Texas Federation of Colored Women's Clubs from 1930 to 1934. George Dement
George Elyott Dement Jr. (January 23, 1922 – January 12, 2014), was an American innkeeper and restaurateur who served from 1989 to 2005 as the thirteenth mayor of Bossier City, Louisiana. Background Dement's parents were George Dement Sr. and the former Clara Catherine Depew. Employed by Gulf Oil, the senior Dement relocated in 1919 from Missouri to Bossier Parish in northwestern Louisiana. When Clara was giving birth to George Jr. with the assistance of a midwife, a mule crawled under their old farmhouse in the Princeton community in search of corn. The creature tried to stand and shook the floor while the baby was being brought forward. John Dement
John Dement (26 April 1804 – 16 January 1883) was an American politician and militia commander from the U.S. state of Illinois. Born in Tennessee, he migrated with his family to Illinois when he was in his early teens. His first political office was as county sheriff and he later served multiple terms in the Illinois House of Representatives. Dement held the federal Receiver of Public Moneys post with U.S. Government Land Office under five different presidential administrations. During the 1832 Black Hawk War, Dement commanded a battalion in combat at the Second Battle of Kellogg's Grove. Sauk war chief Black Hawk later commented on the valor displayed by Dement during the battle. Dement died in 1883 at his home in Dixon, Illinois. Iris Luella DeMent (born January 5, 1961) is an American two-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter and musician . DeMent's musical style includes elements of folk, country and gospel. Early life DeMent was born in Paragould, Arkansas, the 14th and youngest child of Pat DeMent (1910–1992) and wife Flora Mae (1918–2011). Iris's mother had harbored dreams of going to Nashville and starting a singing career. Although she put those plans on hold to get married, her singing voice was an inspiration and influence for her youngest daughter Iris. DeMent was raised in a Pentecostal household. Kenneth Dement
Kenneth "Redneck" Dement (February 13, 1933 – February 15, 2013) was an American football offensive tackle/defensive tackle. He played college football for Southeast Missouri State University. He was a 25th round selection (296th overall) selection by the New York Giants in the 1955 NFL Draft. But instead of playing professionally, Dement joined the United States Marine Corps where he achieved the rank of captain. After his military career, Dement went back to school, earning a law degree at Washington University School of Law in St. Louis. He returned to Sikeston, Missouri where he had grown up and began practicing law. From 1976 until 1981, he served on the Board of Regents for Southeast Missouri State University, including in the role as its president. David Michael Dement (born April 10, 1954) is an American college basketball coach who was most recently the head men's basketball coach at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is married to former Southern Methodist University women's basketball head coach Rhonda Rompola. From Louisburg, North Carolina, he was the head coach for UNCG from 1991 to 1995, leading them from a team with no conference affiliation to the top of the Big South Conference regular season standings in just four seasons. In his last two seasons at UNCG, Dement's teams went 38–18, including a school-record 23 wins in 1994–95 winning the Big South regular season title. Education and military service De Ment was born on December 21, 1931 in Birmingham, Alabama. De Ment attended Phillips High School in Birmingham in 1945 and graduated in 1949. After his graduation, he attended Marion Military Institute as a military student and graduated in 1951. Dement Printing Company
The Dement Printing Company is a historic printing company in Meridian, Mississippi established in 1875. The building in which the company currently operates was built in 1909 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The company was owned and operated by the Dement family until it was sold in 2016 to Melissa Love and Sara Love, two local sisters. They now operate Generations Fine Paper and Gifts at Dement Printing. Foundation Though the Dement Printing Company wasn't officially founded until 1875, the Dement family was in the business of printing well before then. The first Dement to learn the printing trade was James Prentiss Dement (1815–1867), who became an apprentice in 1831. James' son, John Joseph Dement (1844–1926), began the Dement Printing Company in the Lockhard Building at the corner of 25th Avenue and Front Street in 1875.
