Demas Range
The Demas Range () is a mountain range about long that forms the lower east margin of the Berry Glacier in Marie Byrd Land. The range trends north–south culminating in Mount Goorhigian, high. It was discovered by the United States Antarctic Service, 1939–41, led by Admiral Richard E. Byrd, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for E.J. "Pete" Demas, a member of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (October 25, 1888 – March 11, 1957) was an American naval officer and explorer. Berry Glacier
Berry Glacier () is an Antarctic glacier, about long and wide, draining north between Perry Range and Demas Range into the Getz Ice Shelf on the coast of Marie Byrd Land. This vicinity was first photographed and rudely charted from aircraft of the U.S. Antarctic Service in December 1940, and the glacier was mapped in detail by the U.S. Geological Survey from ground surveys and from U.S. Navy air photos, 1959–66. It was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Commander William H. Berry, U.S. Navy, Air Operations Officer for Task Force 43 during Operation Deep Freeze 1969–72; Operations Officer, 1973. There are seven volcanic nunataks along the east side of the glacier. Marie Byrd Land
Marie Byrd Land (MBL) is an unclaimed region of Antarctica. With an area of , it is the largest unclaimed territory on Earth. It was named after the wife of American naval officer Richard E. Byrd, who explored the region in the early 20th century. The territory lies in West Antarctica, east of the Ross Ice Shelf and the Ross Sea and south of the Pacific Ocean portion of the Southern Ocean, extending eastward approximately to a line between the head of the Ross Ice Shelf and Eights Coast. It stretches between 158°W and 103°24'W. The inclusion of the area between the Rockefeller Plateau and Eights Coast is based upon Byrd's exploration. The United States Antarctic Program (or USAP; formerly known as the United States Antarctic Research Program or USARP and the United States Antarctic Service or USAS) is an organization of the United States government which has presence in the Antarctica continent. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN or US-ACAN) is an advisory committee of the United States Board on Geographic Names responsible for recommending commemorative names for features in Antarctica. History The committee was established in 1943 as the Special Committee on Antarctic Names (SCAN). It became the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947. Fred G. Alberts was Secretary of the Committee from 1949 to 1980. By 1959, a structured nomenclature was reached, allowing for further exploration, structured mapping of the region and a unique naming system. A 1990 ACAN gazeeter of Antarctica listed 16,000 names. Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr. (October 25, 1888 – March 11, 1957) was an American naval officer and explorer. He was a recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given by the United States, and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, and organizer of polar logistics. Aircraft flights in which he served as a navigator and expedition leader crossed the Atlantic Ocean, a segment of the Arctic Ocean, and a segment of the Antarctic Plateau. Byrd said that his expeditions had been the first to reach both the North Pole and the South Pole by air. His belief to have reached the North Pole is disputed. He is also known for discovering Mount Sidley, the largest dormant volcano in Antarctica.
