Delfina Cuero
Delfina Cuero (ca 1900 – 1972) was a Native American writer of the Kumeyaay people. The daughter of Vincente Cuero and Cidilda Quaha, she was born in Xamca (later known as Jamacha). The Kumeyaay people, whose traditional lands straddle the Mexican border, were displaced from the San Diego area by an influx of non-native settlers. Her family eventually moved to Baja California in Mexico. After her father abandoned his family, Cuero married Sebastian Osam because her mother said the family needed a man to provide food for them. The couple had five children who survived. Her husband died when their oldest child was eleven and Cuero was forced to provide for her family. She worked as a domestic worker for non-native people. When she tried to return to California during the 1960s, the United States government denied her access because she had no documentation to prove her place of birth. Kumeyaay
The Kumeyaay, also known as Tipai-Ipai or by their historical Spanish name Diegueño, is a tribe of Indigenous peoples of the Americas who live at the northern border of Baja California in Mexico and the southern border of California in the United States. Their Kumeyaay language belongs to the Yuman–Cochimí language family. The Kumeyaay consist of three related groups, the Ipai, Tipai and Kamia. The San Diego River loosely divided the Ipai and the Tipai historical homelands, while the Kamia lived in the eastern desert areas. The Ipai lived to the north, from Escondido to Lake Henshaw, while the Tipai lived to the south, in lands including the Laguna Mountains, Ensenada, and Tecate. The Kamia lived to the east in an area that included Mexicali and bordered the Salton Sea. Florence Connolly Shipek
Florence C. Shipek (December 11, 1918 – January 9, 2003) professor of anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, was an American anthropologist and ethnohistorian, a leading authority on Southern California Indians. Biography Florence McKeever Connolly was born in North Adams, Massachusetts on December 11, 1918. She started her college years at College of Charleston at the age of 15, and then earned her BA (1938) and MA (1940) in anthropology at the University of Arizona. There, she served as field assistant to Clara Lee Tanner and Emil Haury in 1935 and 1939-1940, and published on petroglyphs and ceramics based on that field work. Contributions During World War II, she went to work first at the District Intelligence Office in Seattle and then at the Labor Board. After the war, in 1944 she was an instructor of geology at the University of Washington.
