Delaney (surname)
Delaney is an Ireland, Irish surname derived from the Irish language, Gaelic ''Ó Dubhshláine'', ''Dubh'' meaning black and ''Sláine'' for the River Sláine (River Slaney, Slaney). DeLaney is also of Norman origin. There is a branch of Dulaneys in the United States who trace back to a Thomas Delany. Thomas's son, Daniel, claimed to have been descended from Dr. Gideon Delaune, a Huguenot physician and theologian and founder of the Apothecaries' Hall of Ireland, Apothecaries' Hall. Hence, there are multiple discussions among genealogical circles as to the origin of Delaney since it can be anglicised Gaelic or anglicised French. Felix Ua Duib Sláin (; – 24 January 1202), often anglicised as Felix O'Dullany (''O'Dulaney'', ''O'Dullaney'', ''O'Dulany'' etc.) was a medieval Irish bishop. Biography Felix had a Latin first name meaning "fortunate"; his surname literally means "grandson/descendant of Dubh Shláine," an Irish name meaning "black aired?one of the Slaney", a family formerly powerful in the Upper Woods area of modern County Laois. Felix is recorded as a member of the Order of Cistercians, taking on the white habit at either Baltinglass Abbey or Mellifont Abbey. He is credited with founding Jerpoint Abbey. Edward Delaney
Edward Delaney (1930–2009) was an Irish sculptor born in Claremorris in County Mayo in 1930. His best known works include the 1967 statue of Wolfe Tone and famine memorial at the northeastern corner of St Stephen's Green in Dublin and the statue of Thomas Davis in College Green, opposite Trinity College Dublin. These are both examples of lost-wax bronze castings, his main technique during the 1960s and early 1970s. Eamon Delaney (born 14 July 1962) is an Irish newspaper columnist, author, editor, novelist, journalist and former diplomat. According to the Irish Independent, Delaney's best-selling memoir of life as an Irish diplomat "ruffled feathers" within the Irish diplomatic corps. Education and career Delaney attended University College Dublin (UCD). He was Auditor of the Literary and Historical Society from 1985 to 1986. He served Ireland as a diplomat from 1987 until 1995. Danny Delaney
Danny Delaney (died 14 April 2020) was a Gaelic footballer and administrator. He played for Laois and Stradbally during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. He was from Cork Road in Stradbally. With Stradbally, Delaney won both the 1959 and 1963 Laois Intermediate Football Championships. He also played hurling for the Ratheniska team. In 1973, Delaney was elected vice-chairman of the county board under Sean Ramsbottom. Delaney also served as chairman of the Stradbally club. He died at the Maryborough Centre in Portlaoise of COVID-19 on the morning of 14 April 2020. He had been there for around three weeks, having spent months in the Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise. Delaney was one of nine deaths at the Maryborough Centre over the Easter weekend, reducing the number of residents there by one third. He was buried at Oughaval Cemetery. Dean Delany (born 15 September 1980) is an Irish former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Beginning his career in England with Everton in 1997, three years later he moved on to Port Vale, having never turned out for the first team at Everton despite winning caps for the Republic of Ireland under-21s and lifting the FA Youth Cup. He spent four years with Vale, and did make 39 first team appearances, though was never their first choice keeper. He also spent time on loan at Macclesfield Town, but never made it onto the field. Daniel Delany
Daniel Delany DD (February 1747, in Paddock, Mountrath, Laois, Ireland – 9 July 1814, in Tullow, County Carlow) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin. Educated at the Irish College in Paris, he taught at the English Boys College of St Omer, 265 kilometres north of Paris. In 1783, Delany was appointed coadjutor to James O'Keeffe, Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin. Together, they established St. Patrick's, Carlow College.
