Delage 12C.E.D.irs
The Delage 12 CEDirs was a French racing aero-engine designed and built especially to power the Kellner-Béchereau 28VD for racing in the 1933 Coupe Deutsch de la Meurthe air races. Design and development The 12 CEDirs was an inverted 60° V-12 water-cooled engine with reduction gearing and two Roots blower superchargers. Operational history The 12 CEDirs was flown for the first time, in the 28VD, on 12 May 1933. Problems with propeller speed dogged the initial flights and are blamed for the crash of the 28VD on 14 May 1933. The propeller was over-speeding to a high degree, causing a cooling system rupture. With steam obscuring his view the pilot force-landed the 28 VD with nil visibility, destroying the aircraft but not causing serious injury to the pilot. Delage
Delage was a French luxury automobile and racecar company founded in 1905 by Louis Delâge in Levallois-Perret near Paris; it was acquired by Delahaye in 1935 and ceased operation in 1953. On 7 November 2019, the association "Les Amis de Delage", created in 1956 and owner of the Delage brand, announced the re-founding of the company Delage Automobiles. Early history The company was founded in 1905 by Louis Delâge, who borrowed Fr 35,000, giving up a salary of F 600 a month to do so. Hull, p. 517. The Kellner-Béchereau 28VD was a French racing aircraft built to compete in the 1933 Coupe Deutsch de la Meurthe. Engine failure and damage sustained in the consequent emergency landing prevented the 28VD from participation in the race. Design and development The Kellner-Béchereau 28VD was designed to compete in the 1933 Coupe Deutsch, a race around a circuit from Etampes in two flights separated by a refuelling stop. Engines of less than were stipulated; the Delage 12C.E.D.irs engine of the 28VD just met this limit. The 28VD was a low wing, cantilever monoplane. Its wing span was small (; a wing area large enough to keep the wing loading to values comparable to those of World War II fighter aircraft designed a few years later produced an aspect ratio of only 4.2. Coupe Deutsch De La Meurthe
The Coupe Deutsch de la Meurthe was an international aeronautical speed competition instituted on 25 August 1909 by the French oil magnate Henry Deutsch de la Meurthe. The race was reinstated three times through the years at the initiative of the Aéro-Club de France, and later by Deutsch de la Meurthe's daughter Suzanne. First Coupe Deutsch de la Meurthe Announced in 1906, the first Deutsch de la Meurthe competition was a speed trial intended for all powered aircraft over a distance of 200 kilometres, to be flown as an outward leg of 100 km followed by a return to the starting point. The flight had to be made between 1 March and 31 October, and the performance was recognized only if the previous best performance was surpassed by at least 10%. Roots Blower
The Roots-type blower is a positive displacement lobe pump which operates by pumping a fluid with a pair of meshing lobes resembling a set of stretched gears. Fluid is trapped in pockets surrounding the lobes and carried from the intake side to the exhaust. The most common application of the Roots-type blower has been the induction device on two-stroke diesel engines, such as those produced by Detroit Diesel and Electro-Motive Diesel. Roots-type blowers are also used to supercharge four-stroke Otto cycle engines, with the blower being driven from the engine's crankshaft via a toothed or V-belt, a roller chain or a gear train.
