Delafield, Wisconsin
Delafield is a city in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, along the Bark River. The population was 7,085 at the 2010 census. The city of Delafield is a separate municipality from the Town of Delafield, both of which are situated in township 7 North Range 18 East. History Delafield was established in 1837, named after Dr. Charles Delafield of Milwaukee. It was the hometown of the Cushing brothers, who served the Union cause during the American Civil War—Alonzo (killed during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg), William (led the raid on ), and Howard (an Indian fighter killed fighting the Apache in Arizona after the war). Cushing Memorial Park is named after them and is home to a war memorial in their honor, and Cushing Elementary is specifically named after Alonzo Cushing. The unincorporated community of Buena Vista is located in the town. History The town of Delafield was originally named "Nemahbin". The name was changed in the 4th Wisconsin Territorial Assembly in 1844. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 20.8 square miles (53.7 km2), of which, 18.6 square miles (48.3 km2) of it is land and 2.1 square miles (5.5 km2) of it (10.22%) is water. Edward Delafield
Edward Delafield (May 7, 1794 – February 13, 1875) was an American physician, primarily known as an ophthalmologist, but also for his work in obstetrics and gynaecology. He was the co-founder (with John Kearney Rodgers) of the New York Eye Infirmary and the first president of the American Ophthalmological Society. From 1858 until his death he was the president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. His son, Francis Delafield, also became a prominent physician. Edward Henry Delafield (December 23, 1880 – December 2, 1955) was a Connecticut politician and prominent landowner. Early life Delafield was born in New York, New York on December 23, 1880. Richard Delafield (September 1, 1798 – November 5, 1873) was a United States Army officer for 52 years. He served as superintendent of the United States Military Academy for 12 years. At the start of the American Civil War, then Colonel Delafield helped equip and send volunteers from New York to the Union Army. He also was in command of defenses around New York harbor from 1861 to April 1864. On April 22, 1864, he was promoted to brigadier general in the Regular Army of the United States and Chief of Engineers. On March 8, 1866, President Andrew Johnson nominated Delafield for appointment to the grade of brevet major general in the Regular Army, to rank from March 13, 1865, and the United States Senate confirmed the appointment on May 4, 1866, reconfirmed due to a technicality on July 14, 1866. Violetta White Delafield
Violetta White Delafield, ''née'' Violetta Susan Elizabeth White, (1875–1949) was an American botanist, mycologist, scientific illustrator and horticulturist. (p. 83) Early life Violetta Susan White was born in Florence, Italy to expatriate American parents. She spent most of her childhood in southern France. In 1890, Violetta returned to the United States, where she began collecting mushrooms and studying mycology and botany. Scientific work Delafield was particularly interested in fungi, and her earliest illustrations date back to 1899. She specialised in gasteromycetes and many of her specimens were collected in New England and the Hudson Valley. In the early 20th century, Delafield published three scientific papers under her maiden name, V.S. White, on fungi of the Tylostomaceae and Nidulariaceae families in North America.
