Del Bonita is a hamlet in southern Alberta, Canada within Cardston County. It is located approximately south of Magrath at the junction of Highway 62 and Highway 501. Due to its location near the Canada–United States border, it serves as a port of entry into the U.S. state of Montana at the nearby Del Bonita Border Crossing which is located to the south. Del Bonita is a name derived from Spanish meaning "of the pretty". Del Bonita lies at an elevation of , on Shanks Creek, which flows into Shanks Lake and further east into the Milk River. Del Bonita/Whetstone International Airport is located south of the settlement, on the Canada–United States border. Del Bonita Border Crossing
The Del Bonita Border Crossing connects the town of Cut Bank, Montana with Del Bonita, Alberta on the Canada–US border. It is reached by Montana Secondary Highway 213 on the American side and Alberta Highway 62 on the Canadian side. The crossing was established in 1939, when the highway was completed. At that time, the nearby crossing at Whiskey Gap was permanently closed.Legg, Herbert (1962). Sunburst, Montana
Sunburst is a town in Toole County, Montana, United States. The population was 333 in the 2020 census. It is roughly 30 miles north of Shelby and is near the Canada–US border. History Sunburst has its origins as a farming community and later saw significant population growth after oil development occurred in the 1920s. A refinery was built in 1922 with the discovery of oil in the Kevin Sunburst Oil Field. Since oil development in the area ceased in the 1970s, Sunburst has once again become a primarily agricultural town. The local high school gives homage to its past, as its students are known as the Sunburst Refiners. Coutts, Alberta
Coutts ( ) is a village in southern Alberta, Canada that is a port of entry into the U.S. state of Montana. It is one of the busiest ports of entry on the Canada–United States border in western Canada. It connects Highway 4 to Interstate 15, an important trade route (CANAMEX Corridor) between Alberta, American states along I-15, and Mexico. The community has the name of William Burdett-Coutts, a railroad official. Whiskey Gap, Alberta
Whiskey Gap, originally known as "Fareham", is a ghost town in Cardston County, Alberta, Canada. The former community is approximately south of the city of Lethbridge, southeast of the town of Cardston and west of Del Bonita on Highway 501. History In the 1860s and 1870s American traders crossed into what would eventually become Alberta to trade goods and alcohol for buffalo robes and furs. One of the main routes for this trade, the Riplinger Road, crossed the border just west of Whiskey Gap. Many of the wagon cart trails from the early settlers from this era can still be seen over a hundred years later throughout the valley. During the Canadian prohibition period in Alberta between 1916 and 1924 alcohol was smuggled through this area from the United States into Canada.
