Deir ez-Zor District ( ar-at, منطقة دير الزور, mantiqah, manṭiqat Dair az-Zaur) is a Districts of Syria, district of the Deir ez-Zor Governorate in northeastern Syria. The administrative centre is the city of Deir ez-Zor. At the 2004 census, the district had a population of 492,434. Districts Of Syria
The 14 governorates of Syria, or ''muhafazat'' (sing. ''muhafazah''), are divided into 65 districts, or ''manatiq'' (sing. ''mintaqah''), including the city of Damascus. The districts are further divided into 281 subdistricts, or ''nawahi'' (sing. ''nahiya''). Each district bears the same name as its district capital. Districts and subdistricts are administered by officials appointed by the governor, subject to the approval of the minister of the interior. These officials work with elected district councils to attend to assorted local needs, and serve as intermediaries between central government authority and traditional local leaders, such as village chiefs, clan leaders, and councils of elders. Al-Suwar Subdistrict
Al-Suwar ( ar, صُوَر, Ṣuwar, also spelled as-Suwar or al-Suwwar) is a town in eastern Syria, administratively part of the Deir ez-Zor Governorate, located along the Khabur river, north-east of Deir ez-Zor. In 2004, there were 5297 inhabitants. History In the past, most scholars identified al-Suwar with Suru (''Su-ú-ru''), the capital city of Aramean state Bit-Halupe at the time of Tukulti-Ninurta II; however, Suru is now generally identified with nearby Tell Fiden instead. Edward Lipinski instead identified al-Suwar with the town of ''*Ṣūriḫ'' or ''*Ṣuwariḫ'' (''Ṣú-ú-ri-iḫ)'', the first town mentioned by the king Adad-nirari II in the province of Laqe on the Khabur river.
