Deepdene, Victoria
Deepdene is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, east from Melbourne's central business district, located within the City of Boroondara local government area. Deepdene recorded a population of 2,101 at the 2021 census. Formerly a neighbourhood within the suburb of Balwyn, the Office of Geographic Names officially recognised Deepdene as a bounded locality in April 2010. A proposal to extend the suburb boundaries east to Balwyn Road and north to Belmore Road was voted down by Boroondara Council in April 2014. History Deepdene Post Office, on Whitehorse Road, opened on 14 July 1913. Deepdene railway station was on the Outer Circle railway line, which opened on 24 March 1891 and closed to the public on 9 October 1927 due to lack of passengers. The train which ran on the line was known by locals as the "Deepdene Dasher". Deepdene Railway Station, Melbourne
Deepdene was a railway station on the Outer Circle railway line, located in the suburb of Balwyn, Melbourne, Australia. Located between Abercrombie Street and Whitehorse Road, it was opened on 24 March 1891, along with the line though it, and was named after the adjacent Deepdene House. There was a crossing loop on the single track, with two side platforms. A station building was situated on the east platform. The loop was removed after the initial closure, but replaced on reopening. For a time, the station was also open for goods. Deepedene station was first closed, along with the line, on 12 April 1893. However, it reopened on 14 May 1900, becoming the terminus of the reopened section of the Outer Circle line from Riversdale station. It was served by what became known, ironically, as the ''Deepdene Dasher'', a shuttle service from Riversdale, consisting of one or two "American-style" carriages hauled by a steam locomotive. Dorking () is a market town in Surrey in South East England, about south of London. It is in Mole Valley, Mole Valley District and the non-metropolitan district, council headquarters are to the east of the centre. The High Street runs roughly east–west, parallel to the Pipp Brook and along the northern face of an outcrop of Lower Greensand Group, Lower Greensand. The town is surrounded on three sides by the Surrey Hills AONB, Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is close to Box Hill, Surrey, Box Hill and Leith Hill. Dorking Deepdene railway station is a railway station in the town of Dorking, Surrey, England. Located on the North Downs Line, it lies from (via ). The station is one of three within Dorking, alongside (elsewhere on the North Downs line) and (on the Mole Valley line). The station is within walking distance of Dorking station and interchange on a through ticket is permitted. Dorking Deepdene is managed by Great Western Railway, which also operates all services through the station. The station has two platforms, each long enough to accommodate a four-carriage train. The Deepdene is a yellow diamond widely considered to be the largest irradiated diamond in the world. Origin of the name The Deepdene gets its name from the Pennsylvania estate of Margaret Adams Plummer, wife of Cary W. Bok, both the diamond's original owners. At the time, the Deepdene weighed slightly more at and was mounted in a diamond clip. Harry Winston bought the diamond from the Boks in 1954 and it eventually found its way to a London firm in 1960 and later to a German owner. Irradiation scandal On 27 May 1971, Christie's auction house in Geneva offered to prospective buyers the cushion-cut, fancy golden-yellow diamond which would only later come to be known as the "Deepdene." Its clarity was stated as VVS1 (with two very small imperfections near the girdle or midsection of the stone) and its vivid-yellow colour was guaranteed to be natural by both the German gemological institute and the University of Mainz.
