Debbie Smith (Nevada Politician)
Debbie Smith (January 14, 1956 – February 21, 2016) was an American politician who served as a member of the Nevada Senate for District 13. Career Smith served on the Lander County School Board. Smith has served as President of the Nevada Parent Teacher Association. Smith was a retired Benefits Information Representative for the International Union of Operating Engineers. Smith had previously served as a member of the Nevada State Assembly from District 30. In the Assembly, Smith served as an Assistant Majority Whip in the 74th and 75th Regular Legislative Session (2007–2009) and Speaker Pro Tempore in the 76th Regular Legislative Session in 2011. Personal life She lived in Sparks, Nevada. Majority Whip
A whip is an official of a political party whose task is to ensure party discipline in a legislature. This means ensuring that members of the party vote according to the party platform, rather than according to their own individual ideology or the will of their donors or constituents. Whips are the party's "enforcers". They try to ensure that their fellow political party legislators attend voting sessions and vote according to their party's official policy. Members who vote against party policy may "lose the whip", being effectively expelled from the party. The term is taken from the " whipper-in" during a hunt, who tries to prevent hounds from wandering away from a hunting pack. Nevada State Senate
The Nevada Senate is the upper house of the Nevada Legislature, the state legislature of U.S. state of Nevada, the lower house being the Nevada Assembly. It currently (2012–2021) consists of 21 members from single-member districts. In the previous redistricting (2002–2011) there were 19 districts, two of which were multimember. Since 2012, there have been 21 districts, each formed by combining two neighboring state assembly districts. Each State Senator represented approximately 128,598 as of the 2010 United States Census. Article Four of the Constitution of Nevada sets that State Senators serve staggered four-year terms. In addition, the size of the Senate is set to be no less than one-third and no greater than one-half of the size of the Assembly. Term limits, limiting senators to three 4-year terms (12 years), took effect in 2010.
