Debabrata Saikia
Debabrata Saikia ( Assamese: দেবব্ৰত শইকীয়া; born 14 December 1964) is an Assamese politician. He is the incumbent Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly. Saikia was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2011 from Nazira constituency. He was reelected in both 2016 and 2021. He is the son of Hiteswar Saikia and Hemoprova Saikia. Early and personal life Saikia was born on 14 December 1964, at Nazira, Sivasagar, Assam. He is the son of former Chief Minister of Assam, Hiteswar Saikia and former minister Hemoprova Saikia. Sri Saikia had completed his graduation in Arts from Calcutta University. He married Smti Bandana Saikia. Saikia and his wife have two children, Luit and Krishnika. Nazira
Nazira (IPA: nəˈzɪərə) is a town and a municipal board in Sivasagar district in the Indian state of Assam. Nazira is a historical town on the bank of the Dikhow River. It is around 18 km from Sivasagar city, 3 km from Simaluguri Jn. and 78 km from Jorhat Airport. It is the Sub-divisional Head Office of Nazira Sub-division. History Nazira was an important place in the Ahom Kingdom. Nearby Gargaon was the capital of the kingdom over a long period. According to tradition Nazira got its name from "Now-Jeera", which in Assamese means resting place of boats. The historian Sarbananda Rajkumar states, however, that ''nazira'' is a Tai Ahom word: ''na'' means "land", ''zi'' "inclined" and ''ra'' "much". Therefore ''nazira'' means a "much inclined land". 2016 Assam Legislative Assembly Election
The Assam Legislative Assembly Election of 2016 was held in two phases, on 4 and 11 April 2016, to elect members of the 126 constituencies in Assam, a state in North-eastern India. The overall voter turnout was 84.72%, which set a new record for Assam. The turnout was an increase from the 2011 Assembly election figure of 75%. The counting of votes and results declaration was completed on 19 May 2016. The election brought a change of power as the Indian National Congress (INC), which had formed the government under Tarun Gogoi since 2001, lost its majority to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP, lit "Indian People's Party") led by Sarbananda Sonowal. Pranab Kumar Gogoi (19 August 1936 – 3 February 2020) was an Indian lawyer and politician from Assam belonging to Indian National Congress. He was elected four times as a legislator of the Assam Legislative Assembly. He also served as the speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly and minister of the Government of Assam. Early life and education Gogoi was born on 19 August 1936 in Guwahati to Girindra Nath Gogoi and Hiranyalata Gogoi. His father was a minister of the Government of Assam. Tarun Gogoi (11 October 1936 – 23 November 2020) was an Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 2001 to 2016. A Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) is a representative elected by the voters of an electoral district (constituency) to the legislature of State government in the Indian system of government. From each constituency, the people elect one representative who then becomes a member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA).
