Joseph Amlong
Joseph Brian "Joe" Amlong (December 17, 1936 – July 1, 2019) was an American Rowing (sport), competition rower who often teamed with his brother Thomas Amlong, Tom. In 1964 they won the national title in coxless pairs and an Olympic gold medal in the eight (rowing), eights. Next year Joe won a bronze medal in the eights at the European championships. Amlong was born at a military base in Haines, Alaska, to Colonel Ransom George Amlong and Marguerite Kennedy. He had a sister Mary Diane and four brothers: John Michael, Ransom Jerome, Thomas Kennedy and William. In 1946 the family moved to Huntley Meadows Park in Fairfax County, Virginia, and lived there until 1950, when Colonel Amlong was transferred to Belgium. In 1953 Amlong Sr. retired, and the family returned to Huntley. Amlong took up rowing in Liège, Belgium, in 1951, together with Tom. Ennio Guarnieri
Ennio Guarnieri (12 October 1930 – 1 July 2019) was an Italian cinematographer. He was a frequent contributor to the films of Mauro Bolognini and Franco Zeffirelli, and worked on many occasions with Vittorio De Sica, Marco Ferreri and Lina Wertmüller. Early life Born in Rome, Guarnieri abandoned his studies and worked as an assistant cinematographer to Anchise Brizzi from 1949 to 1956. He debuted as director of photography in 1962 with ''I giorni contati'' by Elio Petri. In the late sixties, for his ability to portray actresses, Guarnieri became a trusted cinematographer for stars such as Virna Lisi, Sylva Koscina and Tina Aumont, for which he made extensive use of soft focus, backlight and scrims. His work in Mauro Bolognini's ''L'assoluto naturale'' (1969), starring Sylva Koscina, has been referred to as "one of the cornerstones of Italian photography in the sixties". Buffalo Bisons (AHL)
The Buffalo Bisons were an American Hockey League ice hockey franchise that played from 1940 to 1970 in Buffalo, New York. They replaced the Buffalo Bisons (IHL), original Buffalo Bisons hockey team, which left the area in 1936 after Peace Bridge Arena, its arena collapsed. They were the second professional hockey team to play their games in the Buffalo city proper, after the short-lived Buffalo Majors of the early 1930s; the previous Bisons team had played across the border at an arena in Fort Erie, Ontario. Sudbury Wolves
The Sudbury Wolves are an Ontario Hockey League (OHL) ice hockey team based in Greater Sudbury, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Sudbury has had various hockey teams competing at the Junior ice hockey, junior and senior ice hockey levels of the game known as the "Wolves" (or "Cub Wolves") nearly every year since around the time of World War I. The current junior franchise came into existence in 1972 when local businessman Mervin "Bud" Burke purchased the Niagara Falls Flyers and relocated the team to Sudbury. The current franchise has never won the Memorial Cup, nor has it captured the J. Ross Robertson Cup. Derrill Radcliff Osborn (July 22, 1942 – July 1, 2019) was an American fashion executive. Osborn graduated from Abilene High School and attended Abilene Christian College. He served in the U.S. Army. Athletics At The 1954 British Empire And Commonwealth Games
At the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, the athletics events were held at Empire Stadium in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in July and August 1954. A total of 29 athletics events were contested at the Games, 20 by men and 9 by women. A total of twenty-four Games records were set or improved over the competition, leaving just five previous best marks untouched. The 1954 edition saw the introduction of the shot put and discus throw for women, as well as the first 4×110 yards relay for women (which replaced a medley relay). The men's mile run competition – dubbed ''The Miracle Mile'' – represented a landmark in the history of the Four-minute mile. Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Games, often referred to as the Friendly Games or simply the Comm Games, are a quadrennial international multi-sport event among athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930, and, with the exception of 1942 and 1946 (cancelled due to World War II), have successively run every four years since. The Games were called the British Empire Games from 1930 to 1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966, and British Commonwealth Games from 1970 to 1974. Jackie Mekler
Jack Mekler (4 March 1932 – 1 July 2019) was a South African long-distance runner. As a boy in an orphanage, he became a self-taught runner. He was boosted by fierce self-determination that grew out of his lonely and harsh childhood experience. His early life was spent in Johannesburg, where he attended Parktown Boys' High School. Arthur McGee
Arthur Lee McGee (March 25, 1933 – July 1, 2019) was an American fashion designer. In 1957, he was the first African American designer hired to run a design studio on Seventh Avenue in the Garment District in New York City. Early life and education Arthur Lee McGee was born on March 25, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan. His mother Rose was a dressmaker, she created her own clothing designs and taught he to him about fashion early in his childhood. His mother liked hats, so as a child he was determined to learn to make hats so he could make her one. He attended Traphagen School of Fashion in New York City because he had won a scholarship. Pierre Lenhardt
Pierre Lenhardt (5 November 1927 – 1 July 2019) was a French Catholic religious theologian in the Congregation of Our Lady of Sion. Career Pierre Lenhardt spend most of his childhood in Morocco. He studied at ESSEC Business School and graduated in 1950. He began his career at Our Lady of Sion in 1962. He presented his master's thesis, titled ''Conditions de légitimité d'un témoignage chrétien auprès des juifs'' (Conditions of legitimacy of a Christian witness to the Jews) at the Catholic University of Paris in 1970.
