''Deathmaze'' is a fantasy board game published by Simulations Publications (SPI) in January 1980 that falls into the general category of dungeon crawls, more specifically, dungeon games in which players enter a dungeon, massacre the dungeon dwellers and steal their treasures. ''Citadel of Blood'', subtitled "Fantastic Adventure in the Fortress of Evil". is a dungeon-crawl board game published by Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) in 1980. Description ''Citadel of Blood'' is a cooperative fantasy dungeon crawl where 1–6 players enter the dungeon of the evil wizard "X the Unknown", kill any monsters encountered and take their treasure. Unlike fantasy role-playing games with a dungeon-crawl theme such as ''Dungeons & Dragons'', ''Citadel of Blood'' does not need a gamemaster to design the dungeon and play the monsters within during combat, nor does it use numbered paragraphs as were used in Flying Buffalo's ''Buffalo Castle'' expansion for ''Tunnels & Trolls''. Cooperative Board Games
Cooperative board games are board games in which players work together to achieve a common goal rather than competing against each other. Either the players win the game by reaching a pre-determined objective, or all players lose the game, often by not reaching the objective before a certain event ends the game. ''Moves'' was a wargaming magazine originally published by Simulations Publications, SPI (Simulations Publications, Inc.), who also published manual wargames. Their flagship magazine ''Strategy & Tactics'' (''S&T''), was a military history magazine featuring a new wargame in each issue. While S&T was devoted to historical articles, ''Moves'' focused on the play of the games. Each issue carried articles dealing with strategies for different wargames, tactical tips, and many variants and scenarios for existing games. As time passed, reviews of new games also became an important feature. While the majority of the articles dealt with SPI games, the magazine was open to and published many articles on games by other companies. ''Phoenix'' was a magazine primarily focussed on board wargames. It was published in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s by Simpubs Ltd., the British subsidiary of American game company Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI). History In 1974, SPI started to ship some of their wargames to J.D. Bardsley in the UK, who acted as a sales representative using the name SP/UK. Bardsley sold the games either via mail order or face to face at games conventions. Sales increased rapidly, and by March 1976, SP/UK had sold 25,000 units. To handle the increased sales, SPI formed a formal British subsidiary, Simpubs Ltd. in June 1976.
