Arthur Kent "Ding" Dearborn (May 27, 1886 – August 28, 1941) was an American Track and field, track and field athlete who competed at the 1908 Summer Olympics. He finished fourth in the Athletics at the 1908 Summer Olympics – Men's Greek discus, Greek discus throw event and fifth in the Athletics at the 1908 Summer Olympics – Men's discus throw, conventional discus throw. Speedwriting is the trademark under which three versions of a shorthand system were marketed during the 20th century. The original version was designed so that it could be written with a pen or typed on a typewriter. At the peak of its popularity, Speedwriting was taught in more than 400 vocational schools and its advertisements were ubiquitous in popular American magazines. Description of the original version The original version of Speedwriting uses letters of the alphabet and a few punctuation marks to represent the sounds of English. There are abbreviations for common prefixes and suffixes; for example, uppercase N represents enter- or inter- so "entertainment" is written as Ntn- and "interrogation" is reduced to Ngj. Henry Dearborn
Henry Dearborn (February 23, 1751 – June 6, 1829) was an American military officer and politician. In the Revolutionary War, he served under Benedict Arnold in his expedition to Quebec, of which his journal provides an important record. After being captured and exchanged, he served in George Washington's Continental Army. He was present at the British surrender at Yorktown. Dearborn served on General George Washington's staff in Virginia. He served as Secretary of War under President Thomas Jefferson, from 1801 to 1809, and served as a commanding general in the War of 1812. In later life, his criticism of General Israel Putnam's performance at the Battle of Bunker Hill caused a major controversy. Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn
Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn (March 3, 1783July 29, 1851) was an American soldier, lawyer, author, and statesman. Dearborn was the first President of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, and the author of many books. Biography Early life Dearborn was the son of Secretary of War and Major General Henry Dearborn by his second wife and named for his father's friend, Alexander Scammell. Dearborn was married to Hannah Swett Lee, daughter of Colonel William Raymond Lee (1745–1824) of Massachusetts. Dearborn attended the common schools; attended Williams College for two years; and graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1803. Dearborn-Massar was a mid-20th-century American firm specializing in architectural photography founded by Phyllis Dearborn (1916–2011) and Robert J. Massar (1915–2002). Background of founders Phyllis Dearborn was born in 1916 and raised in Seattle, Washington. She graduated with a degree in liberal arts from the University of Washington in 1937. She went on to study photography at the Clarence H. White School of Photography. Her style was influenced by the F/64 group of photographers that coalesced around Ansel Adams, with whom she took courses at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Walter Dearborn
Walter Fenno Dearborn (July 19, 1878 – June 21, 1955) was a pioneering American educator and experimental psychologist who helped to establish the field of reading education. Dearborn, who approached the study of psychology from the perspective of an empirical scientist, is perhaps best known for using empirical research to design and refine teaching methods. Dearborn's research persuaded him that children develop at different rates and that schools should not ignore individual differences by teaching children in large groups or classes.
