Dean Hartgraves
Dean Charles Hartgraves (born August 12, 1966) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played in 1995, 1996, and 1998 with the Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, and San Francisco Giants. He threw left-handed but batted right-handed. Hartgraves attended Crater High School in Central Point, Oregon before attending Fresno State University and Portland State University. Hartgraves was selected by the New York Mets in the 12th round of the 1986 Major League Baseball Draft. He did not sign that time, but when he was drafted by the Astros in the 20th round of the 1987 Major League Baseball Draft, he did. Between 1987 and 1995, Hartgraves spent his time in the Astros farm system, mostly with Triple-A Tucson and Double-A Jackson. Perhaps his best minor league season was 1992 with Jackson, where he went 9–6 with a 2.76 ERA. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the pitcher is assigned the number 1. The pitcher is often considered the most important player on the defensive side of the game, and as such is situated at the right end of the defensive spectrum. American expatriate baseball players in Japan have been a feature of the Japanese professional leagues since 1934. American expatriate players began to steadily find spots on Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) rosters in the 1960s. More than 600 Americans have played NPB, although very few last more than a single season in Japan. The Tucson Toros were a professional baseball team based in Tucson, Arizona, in the United States. The original Toros were a Triple-A minor league baseball team in the Pacific Coast League from 1969 to 1997, where they won the PCL Championship in 1991 and 1993. They were affiliated with several Major League Baseball teams over the years, most notably with the Houston Astros. The most-recent Toros were created as a new team in the independent Golden Baseball League on September 1, 2008.
