Anchor Escapement
In horology, the anchor escapement is a type of escapement used in pendulum clocks. The escapement is a mechanism in a mechanical clock that maintains the swing of the pendulum by giving it a small push each swing, and allows the clock's wheels to advance a fixed amount with each swing, moving the clock's hands forward. The anchor escapement was so named because one of its principal parts is shaped vaguely like a ship's anchor. The anchor escapement was probably invented by British scientist Robert Hooke around 1657, although some references credit clockmaker William Clement, who popularized the anchor in his invention of the longcase or grandfather clock around 1680. When Clement's clock appeared Hooke claimed the invention of the escapement, saying that he had shown a clock with the same escapement to the Royal Society soon after the great fire of 1666. Dead-beat Control
In discrete-time control theory, the dead-beat control problem consists of finding what input signal must be applied to a system in order to bring the output to the steady state in the smallest number of time steps. For an ''N''th-order linear system it can be shown that this minimum number of steps will be at most ''N'' (depending on the initial condition), provided that the system is null controllable (that it can be brought to state zero by ''some'' input). The solution is to apply feedback such that all poles of the closed-loop transfer function are at the origin of the ''z''-plane. (For more information about transfer functions and the ''z''-plane see z-transform). Therefore the linear case is easy to solve. By extension, a closed loop transfer function which has all poles of the transfer function at the origin is sometimes called a dead beat transfer function. Deadbeat parent is a pejorative term referring to parents who do not fulfill their parental responsibilities, especially when they evade court-ordered child support obligations or custody arrangements. They are also referred to as absentee fathers and mothers. The gender-specific deadbeat father and deadbeat mother are commonly used to refer to people who have parented a child and intentionally fail to pay child support ordered by a family law court or statutory agency such as the Child Support Agency. Terminology The term ''deadbeat parent'' is a pejorative term used by child support advocacy groups rather than by Governmental Child Support Agencies. Charles Howard Schmid, Jr. (July 8, 1942 – March 30, 1975), also known as the Pied Piper of Tucson, was an American serial killer whose crimes were detailed by journalist Don Moser in an article featured in the March 4, 1966, issue of ''Life'' magazine.
