De Wicher
De Wicher is a drainage mill near the village of Kalenberg, Overijssel, Kalenberg, Overijssel, Netherlands. It is a hollow post windmill of the type called ''spinnenkop'' by the Dutch. The mill is in working order and used to drain the reed beds during winter to improve accessibility for thatching, reed cutters. History The predecessor of the current mill was the last windmill in the current De Weerribben-Wieden National Park. It was dismantled in 1942. By 1980 a foundation called ''Vrienden van de Weerribben'' got the idea of rebuilding this mill. The idea was taken up by Staatsbosbeheer (English: State Forest Management) and by 1982 the construction of the new mill was finished. Staatsbosbeheer, founded in 1899, is a Dutch government organization for forestry and the management of nature reserves. Staatsbosbeheer currently oversees over 250,000 hectares of land in the Netherlands. Usually this land is open to the public for recreational purposes, but restrictions often apply. Examples are the compulsory use of a leash when bringing a dog, or daytime access only. The organization has been criticized for not taking close enough care of its lands, or for interfering with political decisions, but news reports are generally positive or simply report public service announcements from the organization. Kalenberg, Overijssel
Kalenberg (Low Saxon: Kaelebarg) is a tourist hamlet within the De Weerribben-Wieden National Park in the Dutch province of Overijssel. The hamlet belongs to the municipality of Steenwijkerland. Reed Beds
A reedbed or reed bed is a natural habitat found in floodplains, waterlogged depressions and estuaries. Reedbeds are part of a succession from young reeds colonising open water or wet ground through a gradation of increasingly dry ground. As reedbeds age, they build up a considerable litter layer that eventually rises above the water level and that ultimately provides opportunities in the form of new areas for larger terrestrial plants such as shrubs and trees to colonise. Artificial reedbeds are used to remove pollutants from greywater, and are also called constructed wetlands. Thatching is the craft of building a roof with dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, sedge (''Cladium mariscus''), rushes, heather, or palm branches, layering the vegetation so as to shed water away from the inner roof. Weerribben-Wieden National Park (Dutch: ''Nationaal Park Weerribben-Wieden'') is a Dutch national park in the Steenwijkerland and Zwartewaterland municipalities in the Overijssel province.
