De Maizière Cabinet
The cabinet of Lothar de Maizière was the last cabinet of East Germany before German reunification. It was formed on 12 April 1990, following the general election in March, and existed until reunification with West Germany on 3 October 1990. It was originally a coalition government between the Alliance for Germany ( Christian Democratic Union (CDU), German Social Union (DSU), Democratic Awakening (DA)), Social Democratic Party in the GDR (SPD), and Association of Free Democrats (BFD). On 16 August, three ministers were fired from the cabinet. In protest, the SPD left the coalition and their remaining ministers resigned on 20 August. Rainer Ortleb
Rainer Ortleb (born Gera 5 June 1944) is a German academic and politician. From October 1990 he served under Helmut Kohl as a Federal Minister for Special Affairs in Germany's first post-reunification government. In the next government, between 1991 and 1994, he served as Federal Minister of Education and Research. Life Early years Ortleb was born directly after the war in the eastern part of Thuringia, then a part of the Soviet occupation zone in what had until recently been central southern Germany. During his early years the zone became the newly created German Democratic Republic. Ortleb successfully completed his schooling in 1962 and undertook military service with the National People's Army until 1964, then signing up as an army reserve officer. Alliance For Germany
The Alliance for Germany (german: Allianz für Deutschland) was an opposition coalition in East Germany. It was formed on 5 February 1990 in Berlin (then West Berlin) to stand in the East-German Volkskammer elections. It consisted of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Democratic Awakening (DA) and the German Social Union (DSU). The German Forum Party was invited to join, but declined. The Alliance won the most votes in the 1990 East German general election, winning 48.2% of votes cast (CDU 40.9%; DSU 6.3%; DA 0.9%), and would control 192 of 400 seats in the Volkskammer. It formed the government in East Germany until German Reunification. Lothar de Maizière from the CDU was minister-president. Sybille Reider
Sybille Reider (born 8 October 1949) is a German retired politician. She was a government minister in the last cabinet of East Germany. Reider was born in Wengelsdorf, Saxony-Anhalt in the newly established German Democratic Republic. She studied law at Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, completing her ''Diplom'' in 1972. She worked as legal adviser and later taught law in Leipzig. Reider joined the Social Democratic Party in the GDR (SPD) in January 1990. She successfully ran in the 1990 East German general election. On 12 April, she was appointed to the cabinet of Lothar de Maizière as Minister for Trade and Tourism. Frank Terpe
Frank Terpe (born Nünchritz 10 October 1929) is a German mathematician and retired Politician ( SDP/SPD). He was a professor at Greifswald University. In 1990 he served as Minister for Research and Technology in East Germany's only democratically elected government. Life Early years Frank Terpe was born a couple of weeks before the US Stock Market famously collapsed, in a small country town some 25 km (15 miles) down river of Meißen in central Germany. Walter Romberg
Walter Romberg (27 December 1928 – 23 May 2014) was a German politician and finance minister of East Germany. Early life and education Romberg was born in Schwerin on 27 December 1928. From 1947 he studied physics and mathematics. He held a Dr. rer. nat. in mathematics. Career He worked at the East German Academy of Sciences. He was editor-in-chief of the Zentralblatt MATH from 1965 to 1978. Romberg became a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in 1989. He served as the minister without portfolio in the cabinet of Prime Minister Hans Modrow between 1989 and 1990. Christa Schmidt
Christa Schmidt (born Christa Weigel: 3 April 1941) is a retired Germany, German politician (Christian Democratic Union of Germany, CDU) who served as a minister in the de Maizière cabinet, last government of East Germany. She built an earlier career as a teacher and educationalist. Life Christa Weigel was born in Leipzig during the first half of the Second World War. Between 1955 and 1959 she studied at a Teacher Training Institute for non-graduate teachers: between 1959 and 1964 she taught at the Goethe-School in Mügeln, a small town located a short distance to the east of Leipzig. She then switched to the Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, Pestalozzi School for children with special needs in Leipzig, where she taught from 1964 till 1990. Hans Joachim Meyer (born 13 October 1936) is a German politician ( CDU). He served in the de Maizière cabinet as the last East German Minister for Education and the Arts. After reunification he became in the regional government of Saxony. Regine Hildebrandt
Regine Hildebrandt (née Radischewski; 26 April 1941 – 26 November 2001) was a German biologist and politician (Social Democratic Party of Germany). Life Early years Wartime in Germany Regine Radischewski was born in Berlin during the war, the second of her parents' two recorded children. Her father was a pianist who worked as an accompanist at the National Ballet Academy. Her mother would later own a small tobacconist shop. When she was two the family were evacuated from central Berlin to countryside far to the east of Germany, and shortly after that they were bombed out, losing most of their material possessions. Rainer Eppelmann () (born 12 February 1943 in Berlin), is a German politician. Known for his opposition in the German Democratic Republic, he became Minister for Disarmament and Defense in the last cabinet. He is now a member of the CDU. The erection of the Berlin Wall forced him to drop out of the school he had attended in West Berlin in 1961 and he was forbidden from taking his Abitur exams in the East for refusing to join the Free German Youth movement. He then worked as an assistant to a roofer before doing a job training for bricklayer. He is a pacifist. Markus Meckel
Markus Meckel (born 18 August 1952) is a German theologian and politician. He was the penultimate foreign minister of the GDR and a member of the German Bundestag. Early life Markus Meckel was born on 18 August 1952 in Müncheberg, Brandenburg. He had to leave high school in 1969 for political reasons.
