Daylesford Railway Line, Victoria
The Daylesford Spa Country Railway (which is operated by the Central Highlands Tourist Railway) is a volunteer-operated gauge tourist railway located in Victoria, Australia. It operates on a section of the closed and dismantled Daylesford line, and currently runs services between Daylesford and the hamlet of Bullarto. History Victorian Railways era The original line was opened in two stages, from the mainline junction at Carlsruhe to the town of Trentham, on 16 February 1880. The remainder of the line was opened a month later on 17 March. The line initially had significant goods and passenger traffic, with 50,000 passengers travelling the line in 1884 alone. However, over the next seventy years, both traffic and the quality of line gradually degraded, until the last passenger service was replaced with a road coach in 1978. Victorian Railways Y Class (diesel)
The Y class are a class of diesel locomotives built by Clyde Engineering, Granville for the Victorian Railways between 1963 and 1968. History In 1963, the first of 25 general purpose diesel-electric locomotives was delivered by Clyde Engineering. As a cost saving measure, they were built with bogies and motors retrieved from scrapped Swing Door electric suburban train sets; the re-use of these components reduced the unit cost of the Y class locomotive from around £52,000 ( $104,000) to £40,000 ($80,000). Two further orders saw the class total 75 by 1968. Although built to dieselise Victoria's shunting operations and replace steam locomotives on branch line services, they were also used on mainline goods and passenger services, including between Spencer Street and Werribee. Passing Clouds railway station is a railway station on the Daylesford line, in the locality of Musk, in Central Victoria, Australia. It was opened on 19 July 2018. Bullarto Railway Station
Bullarto railway station is a railway station on the Daylesford line, in Bullarto, Victoria, Australia. The station opened on Wednesday, 17 March 1880, and closed on Monday, 3 July 1978. In 1969, the platform was 74m in length and, in 1975, Bullarto was working under no-one-in-charge conditions. At 747m above sea level, it was the second-highest station on the former Victorian Railways system. Tylden railway station, a former station on the Daylesford railway line in Victoria, Australia, was located about 2.4 km to the east of Tylden township, near Central Road. Victorian Railways Fixed Wheel Passenger Carriages
The first passenger carriages of the Victorian Railways (VR) were fixed-wheel, with a mixture of first- and second-class bodies on either four- or six-wheeled underframes. They were built to the British side-loading, swing-door, cross bench compartment (non-corridor) style; later a saloon style was used to a limited extent, featuring fewer doors per side and perimeter seating - which increased total capacity by allowing more standing passengers. Initial designs had some common themes: A and B type carriages were for first- and second-class travellers; C indicated third-class initially, though later was re-allocated for flat wagons to transport horse-drawn carriages, and later still for hearse vans (the first three of which had been modified from E class mail vans); D was used for guards' vans, E for mail vans, and F for horse boxes.
