Murray McLauchlan
Murray Edward McLauchlan, (born 30 June 1948) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, and harmonica player. He is best known for his Canadian hits "Farmer's Song," "Whispering Rain," and "Down by the Henry Moore". Early life McLauchlan was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland; he immigrated to Canada with his family when he was five years old. He grew up in suburban Toronto. At 17, he began playing at coffeehouses in Toronto's Yorkville area and later attended Central Tech as an art student before deciding to become a full-time musician. Career In the 1960s McLauchlan moved to New York City, but had little success in promoting his musical career there. In 1970, McLauchlan returned to Toronto and signed with True North Records; he released an album, ''Songs from the Street'' in 1971. True North Records is a Canadian independent record label. History True North Records was founded in Mississauga, Ontario in 1969 by Bernie Finkelstein. By 1971, True North was producing albums for various Canadian musicians, including Bruce Cockburn and Murray McLauchlan, which were then distributed by Columbia Records in Canada. The company also arranged US distribution for some of its artists. In December 2007, the company was acquired by an investment group led by Linus Entertainment with Finkelstein remaining as Chairman. The company won a Juno Award in 1974 for "Best Independent Record Company of the Year" and began operating a concert division, True North Concerts, in 2008. ''Murray McLauchlan'' was a 1972 folk rock album by Canadian singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist, broadcaster and actor, Murray McLauchlan. Murray travelled to New York City to record this album, between June and July at The Record Plant. This is evident in his backing musicians which include a number of well known American musicians of the time including Tony Levin, Charlie Hayward of the Charlie Daniels Band and David Spinozza. He also enlisted record producer Ed Freeman who had produced Don McLean's best selling album '' American Pie'' the previous year. The album is notable as well for containing the first known commercially released version of the Warren Zevon song " Carmelita", which was not released by Zevon himself until 1976, and was covered by Linda Ronstadt in 1977. Chris Parker (musician)
Chris Parker is an American drummer. During his childhood, Parker's father, artist Robert Andrew Parker, attached wooden blocks to the hi-hat and bass drum pedals, so that Parker's feet could reach the pedals to play the drums along with records. His father, who was also a jazz drummer, introduced young Parker to the music of Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Leadbelly, Ray Charles, Woody Herman, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington. When he became a teenager he began practicing with friends and finding out the nostalgia of rock and roll by listening to such jazz drummers as Roger Hawkins, D. J. Fontana, and New Orleans icons such as Earl Palmer, Smokey Johnson and James Black.
