She settled at the age of 50 at Rise Cottage on the Cashmere, New Zealand, Cashmere Hills near Christchurch, with her companion Effie Pollen, where she created a sheltered garden with views over the city and towards the Southern Alps, and began writing poems about the landscape. Although she considered herself "by birth and choice English", and spent her life travelling between England and New Zealand, she was one of the first distinctively New Zealand poets, seen today as a pioneer of its modern poetry. Background and social work Bethell was the eldest daughter of the well-to-do sheep farmer Richard Bethell and his wife Isabel Anne, née Lillie, and was born in Horsell, Surrey, England, in 1874. Day And Night (painting)
''Day and Night'' ( es, Día y noche) is a mural by Rufino Tamayo, painted using Vinylite resin on canvas and mounted on particleboard. As well as ''Still Life'', it was originally created for the perfumes and pharmacy section of the Sanborns store on Lafragua Street in Mexico City. Since 2011 it has been displayed in the lobby of the Museo Soumaya. Description Tamayo executed the work in 1954, employing the same technique used for the other murals in the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts), ''The Birth of Our Nationality'' and ''Mexico of Today''. The mural contains abstract elements associated with the cosmos and with Mesoamerican architecture, with chromatic contrasts of red and black. The work reflects Tamayo’s interest in space during the 1950s, as well as a growing involvement with Mexican history. It bears comparison with other Tamayo works such as ''Man Contemplating the Firmament'' and ''The Astronomer''. During an inaugural visit to the mural, Tamayo told ...

Day And Night (cellular Automaton)
Day and Night is a cellular automaton rule in the same family as Game of Life. It is defined by rule notation B3678/S34678, meaning that a dead cell becomes live (is born) if it has 3, 6, 7, or 8 live neighbors, and a live cell remains alive (survives) if it has 3, 4, 6, 7, or 8 live neighbors, out of the eight neighbors in the Moore neighborhood. It was invented and named by Nathan Thompson in 1997, and investigated extensively by David I. Bell. The rule is given the name "Day & Night" because its ''on'' and ''off'' states are symmetric: if all the cells in the Universe are inverted, the future states are the inversions of the future states of the original pattern. A pattern in which the entire universe consists of ''off'' cells except for finitely many ''on'' cells can equivalently be represented by a pattern in which the whole universe is covered in ''on'' cells except for finitely many ''off'' cells in congruent locations. Although the detailed evolution of this cellular aut ...

Jacob Epstein
Sir Jacob Epstein (10 November 1880 – 21 August 1959) was an American-British sculptor who helped pioneer modern sculpture. He was born in the United States, and moved to Europe in 1902, becoming a British subject in 1911. He often produced controversial works which challenged ideas on what was appropriate subject matter for public artworks. He also made paintings and drawings, and often exhibited his work. Early life and education Epstein's parents, Max and Mary Epstein, were Polish Jewish refugees, living on New York's Lower East Side. His family was middle-class, and he was the third of five children. His interest in drawing came from long periods of illness; as a child he suffered from pleurisy. He studied art in his native New York as a teenager, sketching the city, and joined the Art Students League of New York in 1900. For his livelihood, he worked in a bronze foundry by day, studying drawing and sculptural modelling at night. Epstein's first major commission was ...
