Davol Square
Davol Square ( ) is a historic area within the Jewelry District of Providence, Rhode Island. It is located at the intersection of Point Street and Eddy Street. Description The historic Davol Rubber Company complex is located at the norther corner of the intersection. The complex consists of interconnected brick buildings constructed between 1880 and 1913 for rubber and medical device manufacturing. In the 1980s, the complex was renovated by Beckman, Blydenburgh & Associates for use as a mixed-use office and shopping center; the complex reopened under the name Davol Square Marketplace. In the 2000s and 2010s, the complex was converted to commercial office space. Brown University owns a portion of the complex. Jewelry District (Providence)
The Jewelry District is a neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island located just southeast of Downtown. The historical path of Interstate 195 delineates the neighborhood's northern border while Interstate 95 and the Providence River define its western, southern and eastern edges. Beginning in the 19th century, the area became a center of jewelry manufacturing. In the 1960s, the area was detached from the rest of Downtown with the construction of Interstate 195. A major construction project completed in 2013 relocated Interstate 195 further south, reconnecting the district with Downtown Providence and freeing 19 buildable acres of land. Davol Rubber Company
The Davol Rubber Company ( ) is a historic industrial site at Davol Square, at Point and Eddy Streets in Providence, Rhode Island. The building was constructed in 1880 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is located adjacent to the historic South Street Landing, which was renovated in 2017. The Providence Jewelry Manufacturing Historic District is also nearby. History The Perkins Manufacturing Company was founded in Providence by Emery Perkins and Joseph Davol in 1874, after two years of experiments and inventions by Joseph Davol. It produced rubber medical and surgical devices, such as hot water bottles and catheters. The South Street Station (formerly known as The Narragansett Electric Company Power Station or Narragansett Electric Lighting Company Power Station and rebranded in 2017 as South Street Landing) is an historic electrical power generation station at 360 Eddy Street in Providence, Rhode Island. The structure has since been redeveloped and is now used as an administrative office and academic facility by a number of local universities. History The structure is a massive brick and stone building, constructed in stages between 1912 and 1952. Despite its phased construction, the building has fairly consistent Classical Revival styling. Point Street Bridge
The Point Street Bridge is a movable bridge that crosses the Providence River in Providence, Rhode Island, carrying Point Street from the Jewelry District to Wickenden Street at the base of College Hill. History The first bridge at this site was built in 1872. It consisted of a swing span in length with two shore spans. In 1907, each of the approach spans was divided into three plate-girder spans carried on new granite piers and abutments. However, funding was insufficient to replace the swing span, so its length was merely increased to . The current bridge is the third at this site. Manchester Street Generating Station
The Manchester Street Generating Station is a 510 MW gas-fired power station in the Jewelry District of Providence, Rhode Island. The station's main building is located along the Providence River and defined by three tall smoke stacks. The plant has three Siemens gas turbines and three ABB steam turbines.
