Davitts GAA
Davitts GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the parish of Kilvine in south County Mayo, Ireland. History Gaelic football was played in the parish since the end of the Civil War. In the early 1950s more concerted efforts were made to bring some organisation to football in the parish. The two teams of Irishtown and Ballindine amalgamated and affiliated in 1974. Club name Throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s the team played under the name ‘Ballindine’ at one point and ‘Irishtown’ at another. At one stage the name ‘St. Josephs’ was also used. Since the name of the club seemed to be a bone of contention at times, it was decided to try and settle on a name to unite both sides of the parish. At a meeting in the People’s Hall in Ballindine in 1974, it was decided that the club be named ‘Davitts’. Initially, this name was to be on a trial basis for one year but has lasted ever since. Irish Civil War
The Irish Civil War ( ga, Cogadh Cathartha na hÉireann; 28 June 1922 – 24 May 1923) was a conflict that followed the Irish War of Independence and accompanied the establishment of the Irish Free State, an entity independent from the United Kingdom but within the British Empire. Irishtown, County Mayo
Irishtown () is a village in County Mayo, Ireland, located on the southern county border with County Galway about halfway between Claremorris and Tuam on the R328 regional road. Irishtown is in the Civil Parish of Crossboyne, Barony of Clanmorris and the Catholic Diocese of Tuam. It is sometimes referred to as 'The Cradle of the Land League' due to its connections with the founding of the Irish National Land League. Irishtown was designated as a census town by the Central Statistics Office for the first time in the 2016 census, at which time it had a population of 129 people. Land League Local tenant farmers were threatened with eviction from their holdings on the estate of the local parish priest, The Very Rev. Ballindine
Ballindine () is a village in County Mayo, Ireland. It is located along the Western Railway Corridor, 6.5 km (4 miles) south of Claremorris. The N17 road passes through the village, carrying over 10,000 vehicles daily, and it connects to the R328 road on the south side of town. History The remains of a possible fort are located in a field next to the National School. Folklore states that Ballindine got its name from this fort—''Baile an Daingin'' meaning "Town of the Fortress" and that the souterrain, just outside it, was connected underground to the ruins of the old church in Cloonmore about 2 km (1.25 miles) to the east and also to the ruins of the old church in Garryduff, 5 km (3 miles) west. The Mayo Intermediate Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football competition contested by mid-tier (17-32) Mayo GAA clubs. Ballyhaunis are the title holders (2022) defeating Kilmeena in the Final. Honours The winning club competes in the Connacht Intermediate Club Football Championship. Colm Boyle (born 29 July 1986) is a Gaelic footballer who plays for Davitts and, formerly, the Mayo county team. He won four All Star Awards and played in four finals of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, losing them all and scoring an own goal in the third.
