Davidstow
Davidstow ( kw, Logdewi (village) and kw, Pluwdhewi (parish)) is a civil parish and village in north Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The village is north of Bodmin Moor straddling the A395 road about north of Camelford. The hamlets of Hallworthy, Hendraburnick, Tremail and Trewassa are in the parish. It was formerly known as Dewstow(e). 'Davidstow Cheddar' and 'Cathedral City' brands of cheese are produced at Davidstow Creamery which is operated by Dairy Crest using water ultimately from St David's Holy well, next to the parish church. A military airfield, RAF Davidstow Moor, was built near the village during the Second World War and was later used as a motor racing circuit. Parish church 'Davidstow' means ''David's Place'' and according to legend the church was founded by Saint David in the 6th century, whilst visiting his mother at nearby Altarnun. RAF Davidstow Moor
Royal Air Force Davidstow or more commonly RAF Davidstow Moor is a former Royal Air Force station located north east of Camelford, Cornwall and west of Launceston, Cornwall, England. It was used from late 1942 until 1945 and despite a few periods of intense activity it was one of Coastal Command's lesser used airfields. History The land was acquired in 1941 and a three-runway airfield with extensive dispersal areas was constructed in the first half of 1942. Despite the moorland conditions, construction was reasonably straightforward, although it did involve the removal of various field boundaries, the closure of minor roads and some drainage work. RAF Davidstow Moor closed in December 1945 at the end of World War II and many of the buildings including the hangars were soon removed. Davidstow Circuit
Davidstow Circuit is a disused motor racing circuit and airfield built in Cornwall, in the United Kingdom. The circuit was built on the site of a World War II RAF Coastal Command base, RAF Davidstow Moor, opened in 1942. Davidstow circuit opened in 1952, and held three Formula 1 races between 1954 and 1955. The circuit hosted its last race in 1955, and was one of many of Britain's airfields to be transformed into motor racing venues. Davidstow circuit is notable for the first victory in a Formula One race by a Lotus. Track layout The original track layout of Davidstow circuit was used in 1952 and contained three corners; most drivers thought that this layout was not very challenging. Davidstow Cheddar is a brand of Cheddar cheese manufactured by Dairy Crest, at the Davidstow Creamery in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom, alongside Cathedral City Cheddar. Production Cheddar has been produced at Davidstow for over 60 years, the plant being set up there in 1951 by Cow & Gate. Milk is supplied by 300 farms in Cornwall and Devon, all within a 50-mile radius. The Davidstow plant is the largest in Britain, having been upgraded in 2004, and has the capacity to produce 1,000 tonnes of Davidstow and Cathedral City cheese per week. Saputo Dairy UK Limited is a holding company for Dairy Crest Limited, a British dairy products company. It was created in 2019 when the Canadian company Saputo Inc bought Dairy Crest. Dairy Crest itself was created in 1981 as a spin-off of the Milk Marketing Board. Its brands include Saputo Dairy UK, Cathedral City Cheddar Cheese, Country Life Butter, Utterly Butterly, Vitalite and Clover. Bodmin Moor
Bodmin Moor ( kw, Goon Brenn) is a granite moorland in north-eastern Cornwall, England. It is in size, and dates from the Carboniferous period of geological history. It includes Brown Willy, the highest point in Cornwall, and Rough Tor, a slightly lower peak. Many of Cornwall's rivers have their sources here. It has been inhabited since at least the Neolithic era, when primitive farmers started clearing trees and farming the land. They left their megalithic monuments, hut circles and cairns, and the Bronze Age culture that followed left further cairns, and more stone circles and stone rows. By medieval and modern times, nearly all the forest was gone and livestock rearing predominated. The name Bodmin Moor is relatively recent. Cathedral City is a brand of Cheddar cheese which is manufactured by Saputo Dairy UK in Cornwall in the United Kingdom. Cathedral City's brand and logo is based on Wells Cathedral in Somerset. History Cathedral City is produced at Davidstow in Cornwall, which has neither city status nor any cathedral. However, the original owners of the brand, Mendip Foods, were based in the cathedral city of Wells in Somerset. Dairy Crest bought the brand from Mendip Foods Ltd in July 1995. Hendraburnick
Hendraburnick ( kw, Hendra Bronnik, meaning ''rushy home farm'') is a farmstead near Davidstow, Cornwall, England. On Hendraburnick Down is the source of the River Camel. In the medieval period, Hendraburnick was a manor held under Launceston Castle. Feet of fines records that in 1383 some land in the settlement of Hendraburnick was held by a Roger Knyght, reverting on his death to a John Lordman of Treleigh. A 17th century farmhouse there is a grade II listed building. Hendraburnick Quoit to the north east is a Late Neolithic dolmen, regarded as "the most decorated or deliberately marked stone in southern Britain". Boscastle ( kw, Kastel Boterel) is a village and fishing port on the north coast of Cornwall, England, in the civil parish of Forrabury and Minster (where the 2011 Census population was included) .
