David Wylie McDonald
David Wylie McDonald, (9 October 1927 – 8 March 2007) was a Scottish architect and a colonial civil servant. He was the Director of Public Works in Hong Kong and the first Secretary for Lands and Works. Biography Born on 9 October 1927 in Armadale, West Lothian, he was educated at Harris Academy, Dundee and volunteered for the Black Watch at the age of 17 in late 1944. One of his first postings was to guard the Princess Elizabeth at Balmoral where he served as a dancing partner and also part of the King's Guard in Inverness and Edinburgh. He took his architecture degree at Dundee College of Art and obtained a trainee job with a local architectural firm and married Eliza (Betty) Roberts Steele on 3 July 1951. He moved to Hong Kong in 1955 and joined the colonial government. He quickly learned Cantonese and was able to communicate with the locals. Armadale, West Lothian
Armadale ( sco, Airmadale, gd, Armadal) is a town within the county of West Lothian in the Central Belt of Scotland. It lies to the west of Bathgate and to the east of Blackridge. Armadale, formerly known as Barbauchlaw, is an ex-mining town which was also known for its brick manufacturing. Happy Valley () is an upper-income residential area in Hong Kong, located on Hong Kong Island. The area is bordered by Caroline Hill to the east, Jardine's Lookout to the south, Morrison Hill to the west, and Causeway Bay to the north. Administratively, it is part of Wan Chai District. Chan Nai-keong
Kenneth "Nicky" Chan Nai-keong, CBE, JP (; 17 November 1931 – 9 May 2003) was a Hong Kong engineer and government official. He was the first Chinese person to become Secretary for Lands and Works from 1983 to 1986. Biography With a family root in Zhongshan, Guangdong, Chan was born in 1931. He was educated at Loughborough College and became a student engineer at the Public Works Department of the Hong Kong government. His first task was road-widening work in Wong Nai Chung Road outside the Hong Kong Jockey Club in Happy Valley. One of this major projects was the construction of the Connaught Road pedestrian underpass to the Star Ferry Terminal in Central. He was promoted to the assistant engineer in 1960 and was sent to Yale University for advanced graduate studies in traffic engineering. The 1974 British Commonwealth Games ( mi, 1974 Taumāhekeheke Commonwealth) were held in Christchurch, New Zealand from 24 January to 2 February 1974. The bid vote was held in Edinburgh at the 1970 British Commonwealth Games. The Games were officially named "the friendly games".
