David Wright (rugby League)
David Wright (born 16 March 1951) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer of the 1970s. A Queensland state and Australia national representative forward, he played in the Brisbane Rugby League for the Brothers club and in England's Northern Rugby Football League for the Warrington club. Wright was born on 16 March 1951. He started playing football in the Brisbane Rugby League with the Brothers club. In July 1973 Wright was first selected to play for Queensland in the series against New South Wales. After then winning Channel 7’s best player award for the 1973 season he earned an off-season stint with English club, Warrington, becoming player number 748. In February 1974 Wright played in Warrington's victory in the 1973–74 League Cup Final. In May 1974 Wright played at Wembley Stadium in London for Warrington in the final of the 1973–74 Challenge Cup, in which they defeated Featherstone Rovers 24-9. Featherstone Rovers
Featherstone Rovers are a professional rugby league club in Featherstone, West Yorkshire, England, who play in the Championship (rugby league), Championship. Featherstone is a former coal mining town with a population of around 16,000 and Rovers are one of the last "small town teams" which were common in rugby league in the early 20th century. The club has produced many junior players who have gone on to play for Super League clubs. There have been over 200 rugby league footballers who have played for Queensland in State of Origin since its inception in 1980. All players who have been selected to debut for the Queensland in State of Origin matches have been assigned a number by the Queensland Rugby League. The 1975 Rugby League World Championship (also referred to as the World Series) was the seventh tournament for the Rugby League World Cup. The format differed from that employed in previous competitions; no single country hosted the matches, which were spread out in a 'world series' hosted by each of the five participating nations over a period of just over eight months. Each team had to play the others on a 'home and away' basis. 1974–75 BBC2 Floodlit Trophy
The 1974–75 BBC2 Floodlit Trophy was the tenth occasion on which the BBC2 Floodlit Trophy competition had been held. A new name was put on the trophy when Salford won by beating Warrington by the score of 10-5 in a replay. The final was played at The Willows, Salford, (historically in the county of Lancashire). The attendance was 4,473, receipts were £1913 and the score 0-0. The replay was at Wilderspool. The attendance was 5,778, receipts were £2434 and the score 10-5. This was the first (and only) floodlit final to require a replay after a drawn first match. Background This season saw New Hunslet join the competition, which increased the number of entrants by one, to a new high total of twenty-two. The format remained the same as the last season with the preliminary round (generally) played on a two-legged home and away basis and the rest of the tournament being played on a knock-out basis. Paul Broughton
Paul Broughton (31 March 1931 – 3 December 2022) was an Australian rugby league footballer, coach and club chief executive. He was the Chairman of the Gold Coast Titans in the NRL. He also served on the board of the North Queensland Cowboys. He has been described by some as an Australian rugby league football identity. Playing career Broughton was graded at St. George in 1952, and captained the team to the Third Grade premiership in 1953. He played in Sydney's First Grade NSWRFL Premiership for St. George in the 1954 season before playing with Corrimal as captain/coach. He played 44 grade games for St. George in all grades (1952-1954). Broughton returned to the Sydney Premiership in 1957 with Balmain but was injured in the first match of the season and forced into retirement. Coaching career Post-playing Broughton coached the St. George Dragons in third grade and reserve grade (three premierships 1962-1964) and went on to become the club's chairman of selectors in 1968. ...
